Athens by bike

Seven Athens bike and e-bike tours compared on price, bike type, route and start time, from a €28.70 morning loop to a ride out to the sea and a night tour, plus a seated e-scooter for riders who would rather not pedal.

What You Should Know

  • Guided small-group rides of 2 to 3 hours, about 9 km, circling the Acropolis hill, Plaka, the Panathenaic Stadium and the Evzone guards; longer versions add the Acropolis or the coast.
  • Departures run daily from 07:00 to 20:00; morning slots suit the Acropolis combination and the coastal ride, while 17:00 starts finish around sunset and night tours end after dark.
  • Regular bikes start at €28.70 and e-bikes at €36.90; most e-bike tours cost €45 to €48, and adding a licensed-guide Acropolis visit costs €69 plus a €30 ticket.
  • City loops view the sites from outside and keep history light; the real decision is bike type, because Athens is hilly and regular-bike riders are the ones who regret it.

Athens Bike Tours: What You Are Actually Booking

An Athens bike tour covers in two and a half hours what takes most of a day on foot: the slopes below the Acropolis, the Ancient and Roman Agoras, Plaka, the Panathenaic Stadium and the guards at the Presidential Mansion, with photo stops at each. Prices start at €28.70 on a regular bike and €36.90 on an e-bike, and the ride is gentle, around 9 km with frequent stops. What it is not is a history lesson: the two biggest operators both state that their city tours focus on the layout of the city and photos rather than in-depth commentary, and the sites themselves are seen from outside.

Looking for an Athens e-bike tour? Most of the tours below offer one, and on this terrain we would take it. The centre climbs steeply around the Acropolis and Areopagus hills, and recent lower-rated reviews of the regular-bike tours repeatedly mention two issues: heavy bikes on the hills, and walking the bike up the steeper paths. The e-bikes here are pedal-assist, so you still pedal; if you cannot, the seated fat-tyre scooters from Wheelz Fat Bike Tours are the one option that needs no pedalling at all.

Below we compare seven bike and e-bike tours from four operators in four formats: city loops by regular bike or e-bike, an e-bike tour combined with a licensed guide at the Acropolis, a ride from the centre to the coast, and an after-dark tour. We list one Athens electric scooter tour separately at the end, as a no-pedalling alternative rather than a bike tour. Prices are live per-person rates in euros, checked on 14 October 2026. If you would rather walk the same ground with more history, see our guide to Athens walking tours; for the Acropolis itself, our Acropolis tour guide compares the licensed-guide options. Prefer not to pedal at all? Our Athens Segway tour and tuk-tuk tour guides cover the same streets. Riding with children? Our guide to the best things to do in Athens for families compares the child-seat options with the other family outings, and our guide to the best things to do in Athens covers the rest of the city.

7 Athens Bike and E-Bike Tours Compared, Plus a Seated E-Scooter

Athens bike tours at a glance: prices run from €28.70 on a regular bike and €36.90 to €48 on an e-bike, up to €105 for the longest Acropolis combination, with the seated e-scooter alternative at €59. Most city tours last 2 to 3 hours. The best tours for families, for riding after dark and for reaching the Athens Riviera are three different tours, so pick by format before price.

What to Expect on an Athens Bike Tour

Two and a half hours and about 9 km around the Acropolis hill, from a shop near Akropoli metro.

  1. 0109:30

    Check-in and bike fitting

Arrive 15 minutes early at Athanasiou Diakou 16, 60 m from Akropoli metro. There is no toilet at the meeting point, and late arrivals cannot join.

  2. 02

Acropolis tips and a hilltop view

A quick briefing on visiting the Acropolis, then you leave the bikes for a 10-minute walk up to a viewpoint over the city.

  3. 03

    Agora path and Roman Forum

A path outside the Ancient Agora, a photo stop at the gate of the Roman Forum and 10 minutes at the Athens Cathedral.

  4. 04

    Plaka old town

Through the main market street of Plaka and the lanes of the old town, with stops at scenic corners.

  5. 05

    Panathenaic Stadium

A 10-minute stop at the marble stadium of the first modern Olympics, after a viewpoint over the Acropolis.

  6. 06~12:00

Evzone guards and back to base

The presidential guards in front of the former royal palace, then the ride back, with tips for where to eat and what to see next.

This follows Athens by bike's scenic loop, the most-booked bike tour in the city. The other city loops visit most of the same places in a different order; the ride to the coast and the Acropolis combination run longer.

Our take (do it early in your trip): The pattern in recent reviews is clear: guests who rode on their first or second day called it the best way to get their bearings, while the lukewarm reviews often come from people who had already walked the centre and felt they saw nothing new. Book it for the morning after you arrive, and keep the restaurant and neighbourhood list the guides send afterwards.

The Best Bike Tours in Athens

Grouped by what each tour does best, with the top pick highlighted. Prices are per adult. For a first day in Athens we'd give the edge to a morning or late-afternoon city loop on an e-bike; for a second visit, the ride to the coast or the night tour shows a side of the city the loops do not.

Best overall

Athens by bike: Athens Scenic Bike Tour

€28.70 on a regular bike or €36.90 on an e-bike during the current 18% discount (€35 and €45 at full price), rated 4.96 from 3,643 reviews. The 9 km loop covers a hilltop viewpoint you walk up to, the path outside the Ancient Agora, the Roman Forum gate, the Cathedral, Plaka, the Panathenaic Stadium and the Evzone guards. Seven start times a day make it the easiest tour to fit around a cruise or a museum booking. Recent guests who were nervous about Athens traffic say the route kept mostly to pedestrian areas and side streets, and many valued the restaurant tips at the end. When a bike breaks, the support team swaps it fast: one recent puncture was fixed in under 10 minutes. It is an overview, not a history tour, and riders under 147 cm go on a regular bike.

Best e-bike city tour

We Bike Athens: Athens Electric Bike Tour

€45 for two to three hours on an e-bike from a shop in Thissio, rated 4.9 from 898 reviews, with guides in English, French, Dutch and Spanish. The route takes in the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, the Acropolis Museum from outside, the Roman Agora, Hadrian's Arch, the National Garden, the Parliament and Plaka. It is the most family-friendly option: children aged 5 to 11 ride in a child seat or as a co-pilot for €20, and there is luggage storage at the start. Several older reviews say the tour ran shorter than the three hours listed, so plan on two and a half.

Best with the Acropolis

Athens by bike: Acropolis E-bike Tour

We'd book this if the Parthenon is the main reason you came, since it pairs the ride with a licensed guide on the rock in one morning. It is the only tour here that takes you inside the Acropolis, with a licensed guide for about 90 minutes after the e-bike loop. It runs 4.5 hours, Monday to Saturday, at €69 with the €30 ticket paid at check-in or €105 with the ticket pre-booked. Rated 4.97 from 737 reviews. Its mixed reviews rate the Acropolis half more highly than the ride, and guests say the guide gets the group past the ticket queue. Plan for no break between the two halves: the Acropolis walk leaves within minutes of the ride finishing, and a July guest found the climb in the midday heat draining. Take water and eat before you start.

Best after dark

We Bike Athens: Electric Bike Tour of Athens by Night

€48 for two to two and a half hours, starting between 17:00 and 20:00 so you finish after dark with the Acropolis and the Panathenaic Stadium lit up. Rated 4.9 from 375 reviews. It skips the heat of a summer afternoon, and guests who also did a daytime tour said the night version felt like a different city. Bring a layer and insect repellent. Two 2026 guests found some bikes worn, with small seats or weak assistance, so test yours before you set off. The operator asks for confident riders, and a few guests in 2025 struggled to find the start, so check the meeting instructions rather than the office address.

Best for a second visit

Athens by bike: City and Sea E-bike Tour

A 4.5-hour ride from Plaka through the Ancient Agora path, past the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center and the battleship Averof at Flisvos Marina, to the beach at Kalamaki. You get about half an hour to swim or have a drink, and a stop for traditional pastries on the way back. €45, rated 4.9 from 270 reviews. Guests say most of it runs on bike lanes and paths, with a couple of busy crossings, and that it shows a side of Athens well away from the crowds in the centre.

Best on a regular bike

Let's meet in Athens: Highlights of Athens Bike Tour

€39.50 for three hours on a Dutch city bike, rated 4.9 from 905 reviews, almost all of them through TripAdvisor. It goes further into Psirri, past the street art, and through the Central Market, with a stop for Greek yoghurt with honey and walnuts. This is a Dutch-run company and most of its recent reviews are written in Dutch, so book the English option and confirm the language when you arrive. The bikes are its weak point: a June 2026 guest found the three-gear bikes heavy on the hills.

Smallest groups

Suncycling Athens: Ride through Athens' Local Treasures

€35 for two and a half hours on a non-electric mountain bike, with bookings capped at 10 and six start times from 07:00 to 19:30. Rated 4.9 from 130 reviews. It starts at Petralona station, away from the Acropolis crowds, and guests mention neighbourhoods and street art alongside the main sights, and a guide willing to change the route if you have already seen the highlights. Smaller bikes and gloves were found for guests who needed them, though one guest disliked riding on busy pavements between restaurant tables. One 2025 guest had a booking cancelled the night before, so keep the confirmation messages handy.

Best no-pedalling option: seated e-scooter

Wheelz Fat Bike Tours: Acropolis E-Scooter Tour

Not a bike tour, and listed here as the alternative for anyone who would rather not pedal: two hours on a seated fat-tyre electric scooter, in a one-seat or two-seat version, for €59. Of 563 reviews, 562 are five stars. The loop stays around the Acropolis area with stops on Mars Hill (the Areopagus) and at the Temple of Hephaestus viewpoint. One guest called it an easy electric scooter, not really a bike, and that is the appeal; we'd shortlist it for riders who are out of practice or cannot pedal, since there is no bicycle to balance. Guests try the scooter on a short stretch of pavement before setting off, and several chose it on a summer day because it was too hot to walk. Child tickets start at age 3.

If you only have an evening, our Athens night tours guide compares the walking and tuk-tuk alternatives. For a guided Acropolis visit without the bike, see our Acropolis tour guide.

Regular Bike or E-Bike in Athens?

Pick the e-bike unless you ride regularly at home. Athens is built around hills, and the city loops climb towards the Acropolis and the Areopagus on cobbles and polished marble paths. On Athens by bike's scenic tour the e-bike costs €8.20 more at the current discount (€36.90 against €28.70), and the most consistent regret in its three-star reviews comes from guests who chose the regular bike: one guest who had chosen the tour because it was described as "relatively flat" wrote afterwards that they should have ordered the electric bike.

What pedal-assist means

The e-bikes on these tours add power only while you pedal, and you choose the level of assistance. Guests who had never ridden one describe picking it up within a few minutes of the briefing. It still needs two working knees and the confidence to ride among pedestrians: one guest with a knee replacement could not use it and wished the listing had said so. If pedalling is the problem, the Wheelz scooter is the alternative.

Who should skip a bike tour

We'd look elsewhere if you have not ridden a bike in years or are uneasy in crowds. The tours share narrow lanes with walkers in Plaka and Monastiraki, and the recent three-star reviews of the busiest tour describe weaving between pedestrians and a few nervous moments on bumpy, crowded corners. A walking tour or the seated scooter is the calmer way to cover the same ground.

Are Athens Bike Tours Worth It?

Yes, for most first-time visitors. A bike tour covers the main sights around the Acropolis in two and a half hours for €28.70 to €48, and recent reviews rate it most highly as an orientation on the first or second day. It is weaker value if you have already walked the centre, or if detailed ancient history is what you are after.

  • Worth it early in your trip: guests who rode on day one or two say it gave them their bearings, a list of places to come back to and restaurant tips they used for the rest of the stay. One who rode at the end of the trip wished they had booked it first.
  • Worth it on an e-bike: for most visitors the €8 to €10 upgrade decides whether the hills are part of the fun or a struggle.
  • Less worthwhile if you have already walked central Athens: the city loops pass the same sites from outside. For a second visit, the City and Sea ride or the night tour shows more that is new.
  • Not the tour for detailed history: the operators say their city loops focus on orientation and photos. Our Athens walking tours guide covers the guided walks that go deeper.
  • Book the combination if the Acropolis is the priority: the e-bike and Acropolis tour adds a licensed guide on the rock for €69 plus the €30 ticket.

Morning, Sunset or Night?

Start time matters more on a bike than on foot, because you are out in the sun with no shade between stops. Athens summers are hot from late morning onwards, and the operators run year-round and go out in light rain. For a winter trip, our Athens in January guide covers what else changes.

Morning07:00 to 10:30

The coolest ride in summer, and the only slots for the Acropolis e-bike tour and the ride to the sea. Suncycling Athens starts as early as 07:00. Book the first slot if you want quieter streets before the cruise crowds reach Plaka.

Late afternoon13:30 to 17:00

Athens by bike's 16:30 and 17:00 starts finish around sunset. A family who rode at 17:00 in July chose it to avoid the cruise crowds and found the evening temperatures made the ride more pleasant. The early afternoon slots are the hottest of the day in summer.

Night17:00 to 20:00 starts

We Bike Athens' night tour and Suncycling's 19:30 start end after dark, with the monuments floodlit and the traffic lighter. Bring a layer outside high summer, and expect less detail at stops you cannot see well in the dark.

How Much Does a Bike Tour in Athens Cost?

A group bike tour in Athens costs €28.70 to €48 per adult (€59 for the seated e-scooter alternative), and €69 to €105 if you add a guided Acropolis visit. No price here includes hotel pickup, food beyond a snack or pastry stop, or tips for the guide. Most people don't realize that the Acropolis combination costs only €6 more with the ticket included (€105 against €69 plus €30 at check-in), and the pre-booked ticket spares you the timed-entry hunt.

Budget€28.70 to €39.50

Athens by bike's scenic loop on a regular bike at €28.70 (€35 full price), Suncycling Athens at €35 and Let's meet in Athens at €39.50 with a yoghurt stop.

E-bike€36.90 to €48

Athens by bike's scenic e-bike at €36.90 (€45 full price), We Bike Athens at €45 by day or €48 at night, and the City and Sea ride at €45. The seated e-scooter alternative from Wheelz is €59.

With the Acropolis or private€69 to €110

The e-bike and Acropolis tour at €69 plus a €30 ticket, or €105 with the ticket; the same add-on on the scenic tour at €105; and a private e-bike tour from Athens by bike at €110 each for two.

Families pay less on some tours: We Bike Athens charges €20 for a child aged 5 to 11 on a child seat, and Let's meet in Athens €32.50 for under-18s. We think the e-bike tier is where the value sits: about €8 to €10 more than a regular bike buys a ride you enjoy rather than endure on the hills.

Our Take

What we consistently see in reviews is that the guide's attention to the slowest rider decides the day more than the route: the best-reviewed rides describe guides stopping traffic at crossings and checking on everyone, and the worst describe riders left behind.

Tips for Booking a Bike Tour in Athens

  • Book an e-bike unless you cycle often. Athens is hillier than it looks on a map, and the regret in the mixed reviews comes almost entirely from guests on regular bikes.
  • Tell the operator your height if you are under 160 cm. Athens by bike's e-bikes are for riders 147 cm and taller and it can arrange smaller frames in advance. A 2025 guest who did not ask struggled on a standard bike for the whole tour.
  • Check your option name in the confirmation. In September 2026 a guest who thought they had booked the Acropolis add-on arrived to find they had not, and had to buy tickets on the spot. The "+ Acropolis" in the tour title does not mean every option includes it.
  • Do not expect a history lecture. Athens by bike and We Bike Athens both say their city tours focus on orientation and photos. If history matters most, take the Acropolis combination or see our walking tours guide.
  • Bring water and a small backpack. One family in July 2026 noted that Athens by bike provides no water and its bikes have no bottle holder or basket. We Bike Athens and Wheelz include bottled water.
  • Arrive early, especially from Piraeus. Start times are firm, and there is no pickup. A cruise passenger on the Acropolis combination advises allowing at least 45 minutes from the port; another reached the Akropoli bike shop on the X80 bus from the cruise terminal in about 30 minutes. Coming straight from the airport? See our Athens airport transfer guide.
  • Find the right meeting point. We Bike Athens asks guests to search for the shop by name in Google Maps, because the street name exists in more than one area of Athens. Two 2025 night-tour guests lost 30 minutes to an hour looking for it.
  • Expect to ride in light rain. Athens by bike runs rain or shine; We Bike Athens cancels, reschedules or refunds only for heavy rain or thunder. Every tour here, the scooter included, gives a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours ahead.
  • Visiting in March? Our Athens in March guide covers the mild 17°C days, the Carnival dates and the two public holidays when the city centre changes.
  • Visiting in September? Our Athens in September guide covers the cooler mornings, the earlier Acropolis closing times and the month's hotel prices.
  • Want more time by the water? If the City and Sea ride gives you a taste for the coast, our Athens Riviera catamaran guide covers sailing days from Alimos Marina, our Lake Vouliagmeni guide covers the mineral lake further down the coast, and our Temple of Poseidon guide covers the drive down the coast to Cape Sounion.

How We Selected These Tours

The Greece Trip Insider team looked at every bike and e-bike tour in Athens with an established review record, leaving out bike rentals and mountain-bike rides on Mount Hymettus, which are a different trip. We added one seated e-scooter tour as a no-pedalling alternative and kept it separate from the bike tours. We checked all eight live listings (seven bike tours and the scooter) on 14 October 2026, including their prices by option and age, schedules, inclusions, exclusions and full star distributions, and read recent reviews and every low-rated review of each. We excluded any tour without a guest review in the past six months, which ruled out one e-bike tour whose last review was in February 2026, and we left out a near-duplicate small-group version of our top pick. We chose tours that cover the main formats (city loops on regular bikes and e-bikes, an Acropolis combination, a coastal ride and a night ride) rather than several versions of the same loop. The top pick weighs review quality and volume, choice of bike, schedule flexibility and how clearly the operator explains what the tour does and does not include.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a bike tour in Athens cost?+

From €28.70 per adult on a regular bike and €36.90 on an e-bike with Athens by bike's current discount, checked October 2026. Most e-bike tours cost €45 to €48, and the seated e-scooter alternative €59. Adding a guided Acropolis visit brings it to €69 plus a €30 ticket, or €105 with the ticket included.

Is Athens a good city for an e-bike tour?+

Yes, and an e-bike suits it better than a regular bike. The centre is hilly around the Acropolis and the Areopagus, and the routes mix cobbles, marble paths and pedestrian lanes. Pedal-assist e-bikes take the effort out of the climbs, and guests on regular bikes are the ones who most often say the ride was harder than expected.

Do Athens bike tours go inside the Acropolis?+

Only one does. Athens by bike's Acropolis e-bike tour adds a 90-minute visit with a licensed guide after the ride, and its scenic tour has the same add-on as an option. The other city loops view the Acropolis and the Agoras from outside, so book your own timed ticket for another slot.

Is it safe to cycle in Athens on a tour?+

Generally yes. The routes keep mostly to pedestrian streets, side lanes and bike paths, and helmets are provided. You will share narrow lanes with walkers and cross a few busy roads, so you need to ride confidently. We Bike Athens says its night tour is not for non-confident riders.

What is the minimum age for a bike tour in Athens?+

Athens by bike requires riders to be over 12. We Bike Athens takes children aged 5 to 11 on a child seat or co-pilot bike for €20, and infants up to 4. Wheelz Fat Bike Tours sells child tickets from age 3, and Suncycling Athens has an infant rate for ages 1 to 5.

How long is a bike tour of Athens?+

City loops take 2 to 3 hours, usually around 9 km with frequent stops. The seated e-scooter tour is 2 hours. The Acropolis combination and the City and Sea ride to Kalamaki beach each take 4.5 hours.

Are Athens bike tours worth it?+

For most first-time visitors, yes. In two and a half hours and for €28.70 to €48 you see the main sights around the Acropolis and get your bearings, which guests value most on their first or second day. They are less worthwhile if you have already walked the centre or want detailed history.

Can I do an Athens bike tour from a cruise ship?+

Yes, but no tour picks up at the port. Most start near Akropoli or Thissio metro stations, reachable from Piraeus by metro or taxi. One guest took the X80 bus from the cruise terminal to the Acropolis area in about 30 minutes; allow at least 45 minutes either way, because start times are firm and late arrivals are not taken on Athens by bike's tours.
