Eight Lake Vouliagmeni tours from Athens compared. Six give you at least 45 minutes to swim, from €79; two include the lake only as a short stop, from €30. Plus the €16 to €19 entry fee explained.
What You Should Know
- Lake Vouliagmeni is a spring-fed lake under a limestone cliff on the Athens Riviera, about 20 km south of the city centre. Most tours pair a swim there with the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion.
- Swim tours give you 45 minutes to two hours at the lake and run four to seven hours in total, with morning starts from 07:00 and sunset versions leaving around 14:00.
- Tours cost €79 to €184 per person for two. Lake entry is extra on every tour here: €16 on weekdays and €19 at weekends, according to 2026 visitor guides and one operator's listing.
- Check the stop length before you book. The cheapest Cape Sounion tours stop for 15 to 20 minutes, and reviews of one say the stop is a look at the lake through a car park fence above it, not a swim.
Lake Vouliagmeni Tours: What You Are Booking
Six of the eight tours below give you at least 45 minutes to swim; two include Lake Vouliagmeni only as a short stop.
A Lake Vouliagmeni tour takes you from Athens down the coast road to a brackish, spring-fed lake set under a limestone cliff, a short way inland from the sea at Vouliagmeni. Operators describe it as a thermal lake, formed when the roof of a cave collapsed, and say the water stays around 22°C all year, which is why tours run it in winter too. It is a protected wetland in the NATURA 2000 network, and swimming is through a paid entrance with a lakeside café and loungers.
Swim or photo stop? The word "Vouliagmeni" appears in dozens of Cape Sounion tour listings, but most of them only drive past the lake or stop for 15 to 20 minutes. If swimming is the point, book one of the six tours below that give you at least 45 minutes at the lake, and bring your own towel: two operators warn that towels are charged for at the lake. One pattern we noticed in reviews: in summer the lake fills up by around midday, and guests on afternoon tours describe queues, a full lake and, once, a closure for a wedding.

This follows CRISPY LOCAL's private full day. The lake-only tour stops after the swim; the sunset version runs the same stops from 14:00.
Our take (morning or sunset): The morning tours put you at the lake soon after it opens and leave the afternoon free. The sunset tours trade that for dusk at the Temple of Poseidon. If the swim matters more than the sunset, we would take the morning slot: reviews of morning tours mention arriving at opening with a free choice of chairs, while afternoon guests describe queues.
Each Lake Vouliagmeni Tour Reviewed
Grouped by what you get for the money, with the top pick highlighted. Prices are per person for two unless stated.
CRISPY LOCAL: Lake & Temple of Poseidon Private Full Day
€142 each for two, rated 4.95 from 708 reviews with 682 of them five stars. Two hours at the lake, an hour for a seaside lunch or ice cream (paid separately) and an hour at the Temple of Poseidon, with pickups between 08:00 and 10:00. The private car or minivan takes up to eight, and four people pay €85 each. The driver is not licensed to guide inside the temple site, and lake and temple entry are extra. We'd give this the edge for a first visit: its reviews keep returning to the seaside fish lunch, where you choose your catch, and to drivers who stretch or reorder the day on request. The one thing we'd agree at pickup is your lake time, since one couple stayed five hours and lost the temple.
Check availabilityCRISPY LOCAL: Thermal Spa Wellness at Lake Vouliagmeni
€110 each for two for four to five hours with two hours at the lake and no temple. A lunch option costs €165 and a Temple of Poseidon add-on €145. It is the simplest way to spend a morning at the lake, though at 4.6 from 85 reviews it rates below the same operator's full day. We'd look elsewhere if you are watching the budget: several low-rated reviews point out that a taxi there and back cost them €60 to €70, against €220 for two here before entry.
Check availabilityCRISPY LOCAL: Sunset Tour to Poseidon Temple & the Lake
€184 each for two, leaving at 14:00 for two hours at the lake, an early meal stop (paid separately) and the Temple of Poseidon at sunset. Rated 4.8 from 32 reviews. It is the priciest tour here, and you pay for the timing: the same stops as the full day, arranged to finish on the cape at dusk. The tradeoff is an afternoon at the lake: guests on summer sunset tours describe queues, a full lake and one wedding closure, with the driver substituting a beach club.
Check availabilityGreece Athens Transfers & Tours: Lake & Temple of Poseidon
€130 each for two on the six-hour option with a 90-minute swim. The €110 five-hour option skips the lake entirely, so choose carefully at checkout. Groups are capped at eight, with morning and afternoon starts. Rated 4.7 from 155 reviews; the listing quotes lake entry at €16 on weekdays and €19 at weekends. The main thing we'd watch for: two September reviews describe losing the temple after the lake stop overran, and one guest who booked the swim option expected entry to be included. It is not.
Check availabilityfotis georgaras: Riviera Escape, Lake & Local Food
€79 per person for six hours in a group of up to six: two hours at the lake, a coastal drive, a seaside bakery for pies and coffee, a taverna and warm loukoumades to finish. Breakfast, brunch, snacks and coffee are included; the listing marks lunch and lake entry as extra. Rated 5.0 from 26 reviews, all of them four or five stars. Reviews describe a bakery breakfast in Varkiza and a family-style taverna lunch the guide orders for the table; one guest believed everything was included, but the listing says lunch is extra, so we would budget for it.
Check availabilityAthenaos Travel & Tours: Lake, Cape Sounion & Poseidon
€144 each for two on the five-hour tour or €162 on the six-hour sunset version, falling to €119 in winter. The lake stop is 45 minutes and the swim is optional, then an hour at Sounion. Pickup covers the airport and ports, and the transport is wheelchair accessible. Only 12 reviews, though nine came in the past year. On the sunset version one group arrived at 18:10 to find the lake had closed at 18:00, so we'd book the five-hour tour if the swim matters.
Check availabilityIt's all Greek To Me Tours: Sounion Small Group
€45 per person on the sunset tour until 31 October and €30 from 1 November, rated 5.0 from 384 reviews. This is a Cape Sounion tour, not a lake tour: you get 20 minutes at the lake for photos, then 75 minutes on Sounion beach and 75 at the temple. Three recent reviews describe the lake stop as a five-minute look through the car park fence above the lake, so book it for Sounion, not for Vouliagmeni.
Check availabilityHellas Vintage Tours: 2 Hour Sidecar Tour
€360 per motorcycle sidecar for up to two, rated 4.9 from 19 reviews. Twenty-five minutes' ride to the lake for a 30-minute stop, then the Vouliagmeni peninsula past the ancient Temple of Apollo Zoster and a short beach walk, with helmets, goggles, a blanket and Greek coffee. No time for a swim. Guests note you need to be able to climb in and hold on, and some describe routes that also take in city sights, so confirm the lake is on yours.

Lake Vouliagmeni Entry, Towels and Opening Hours
None of the tours here includes lake entry, so it helps to know what you will pay at the gate.
| What we found | Source | |
|---|---|---|
| Adult entry | €16 on weekdays, €19 at weekends and on public holidays | 2026 visitor guides and one operator's listing; another listing quotes €15 and €18, and one guest in May 2026 paid €17 including a deckchair |
| Children | Under-5s free; a reduced rate for older children | Visitor guides, which disagree on the exact child price |
| Towels and loungers | Towels are charged for; paid lounger and daybed packages include towels and bar service | Two operators' listings and several guest reviews |
| Crowds | Queues and a full lake by around midday in summer | Guest reviews from several tours; arriving at opening time avoids it |
| Opening hours | About 07:30 to 19:30 in summer and 08:00 to 18:00 in winter | One visitor guide; check before you go |
| Water | Brackish and spring-fed, around 22°C year-round; guests describe it as warmer than the sea rather than hot, and one December visitor measured about 20°C | Operators' listings and guest reviews |
| The fish | Small fish nibble at your feet and legs if you stand still | Mentioned in about ten reviews; most found it fun, one found it annoying |
Because the lake is a paid, managed site rather than a public beach, prices and what the ticket covers (loungers and umbrellas, for example) can change between seasons. We would confirm on the day rather than rely on any one figure.
Driving Route: Athens to Lake Vouliagmeni and Sounion (Interactive Map)
The lake is about 20 km south of central Athens along the coast road through the Riviera suburbs. Tours that add the Temple of Poseidon continue another 46 km along the coast to Cape Sounion.
| Leg | Distance | Driving time (no traffic) |
|---|---|---|
| Athens (Syntagma) to Lake Vouliagmeni | 20 km | About 35 mins |
| Lake Vouliagmeni to the Temple of Poseidon | 46 km | About 55 mins |
| Temple of Poseidon back to Athens | 68 km | About 1 hr 10 mins |
That is about 134 km and two and a half hours of driving for the lake and Sounion together. These are our calculations from Mapbox driving directions and assume no traffic; the coast road through Glyfada and Voula is slower on summer weekends.
How Much Does a Lake Vouliagmeni Tour Cost?
Add €16 to €19 per person for lake entry on every swim tour, and €20 for the Temple of Poseidon if your tour goes there. For two people with both tickets, the totals below are what a day actually costs.
fotis georgaras' lake and food tour at €158 for two plus about €32 to €38 entry, or CRISPY LOCAL's lake-only private trip at €220 plus entry.
Greece Athens Transfers & Tours' swim option at €260 for two and CRISPY LOCAL's private full day at €284, each plus about €72 to €78 in lake and temple tickets.
CRISPY LOCAL's sunset tour at €368 for two plus lake and temple entry. We think the tradeoff is clearest here: you pay about €80 more than the morning full day for dusk at Sounion, and accept a busier afternoon at the lake.
For four people, the private tours drop to €68.05 each for the lake-only trip, €85 for CRISPY LOCAL's full day, €85.50 for Athenaos and €102 for the sunset tour. The group tours stay at €79 to €100 each.
Our Take
What we consistently see in reviews is that the clock, not the operator, decides how the day goes: morning guests get to the lake at opening with a choice of chairs, while afternoon and combined tours run into queues, a full lake or a temple that has already closed.
Tips for a Lake Vouliagmeni Tour
- Check the time at the lake. Swim tours give you 45 minutes to two hours. Many Cape Sounion tours stop for 15 to 20 minutes, which is only long enough for photos.
- Pick the right option at checkout. On Greece Athens Transfers & Tours' trip, only the six-hour option includes the swim.
- Go on a weekday, and early. Entry is €16 on weekdays against €19 at weekends and on public holidays, and reviews describe the lake filling by around midday in summer.
- Agree your lake time at pickup. On lake and Sounion tours, a lake stop that runs long can cost you the temple: three recent reviews describe exactly that.
- Consider a lounger package. Guests who booked a chair or daybed say it came with towels and bar service, which can work out better than renting a towel alone.
- Know the alternative. Several guests say a taxi there and back cost them €60 to €70. A tour adds the driver, the Sounion leg and the lunch stop, which is worth it for a full day but less so for the lake alone.
- Bring your own towel. Two operators warn that towels are charged for at the lake.
- Carry cash or a card for two tickets. Lake entry and the €20 Temple of Poseidon ticket are paid on the day on every tour here.
- Swimming in winter? Operators say the water stays around 22°C all year, but guests describe it as warmer than the sea rather than warm, and one December visitor measured about 20°C. On a windy day some skip the swim altogether.
- Visiting in June? Our Athens in June guide covers the 23°C sea, the heat on the Acropolis and how to fit a lake morning around the rest of a summer day; our July and August guides cover the warmest weeks of the year.
- Want more of the coast? Our Temple of Poseidon tour guide compares Sounion sunset tours, and our Athens private tour guide covers the operators who run these trips in the city.
How We Selected These Tours
The Greece Trip Insider team searched every tour from Athens that mentions Lake Vouliagmeni and read each itinerary to see how long it actually stops at the lake. Six of the eight give you at least 45 minutes for a swim; we kept two shorter stops (a budget Sounion tour and a sidecar ride) and labelled them clearly. We checked all eight live listings on 14 October 2026, including prices by group size and season, itineraries, inclusions, exclusions and star distributions, and excluded any tour without a guest review in the past six months. One sunset tour was left out for that reason, and a lake tour with only two reviews in the past year was left out for thin evidence. The top pick weighs time at the lake, review quality and volume, what the day includes and price. Lake entry prices come from operator listings and 2026 visitor guides, which differ slightly; we quote the most common figure and say so.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much is a Lake Vouliagmeni tour from Athens?+
Swim tours cost €79 to €184 per person for two, checked October 2026, and the private ones fall to €68.05 to €102 each for four. A Cape Sounion small-group tour with a short lake photo stop costs €30 to €45. Lake entry is extra on every tour.
How much is the entrance fee to Lake Vouliagmeni?+
About €16 on weekdays and €19 at weekends and on public holidays for adults in 2026, according to visitor guides and one operator's listing. Under-5s go free and older children pay a reduced rate. Check on the day, since figures vary slightly between sources.
Can you swim in Lake Vouliagmeni all year?+
Yes. Operators say the spring-fed water stays around 22°C all year, and the lake tours run through winter, though guests describe it as warmer than the sea rather than warm. Opening hours are shorter in winter, roughly 08:00 to 18:00 according to one visitor guide.
How far is Lake Vouliagmeni from Athens?+
About 20 km from Syntagma, or roughly 35 minutes by car without traffic along the coast road. The Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion is another 46 km, about 55 minutes.
Do Cape Sounion tours stop at Lake Vouliagmeni?+
Many do, but usually only for 15 to 20 minutes for photos. For a swim, book a tour that lists at least 45 minutes at the lake, such as CRISPY LOCAL's full day or the six-hour swim option from Greece Athens Transfers & Tours.
What should I bring to Lake Vouliagmeni?+
Swimwear, your own towel (operators say towels are charged for at the lake) and money for the entry fee, since no tour here includes it.
Can I combine Lake Vouliagmeni with the Temple of Poseidon?+
Yes, and most swim tours do. CRISPY LOCAL's full day gives two hours at the lake, an hour for lunch and an hour at the temple; its sunset version times the temple for dusk.
