August brings Athens' warmest sea and its cheapest summer hotels, with late August the lowest of all. The heat is the same as July, 15 August is the year's big summer holiday, and the August full moon opens ancient sites after dark.
What You Should Know
- August has the warmest sea of the year in Athens, about 26°C, with July's 34°C heat and almost no rain. It is a beach-and-ruins month, not a walking-tour one.
- Hotels fall through the month: central four-star medians ran €139 to €156 a night in our live sample, and late August was the cheapest summer stretch we found, against September's €179 at the same hotels.
- Sunday 15 August, the Dormition of the Virgin, is the main summer holiday in Greece. Prices barely move, but it is a public holiday, so expect some closures.
- Most people don't realize the August full moon is a free night out: in 2026 the culture ministry opened more than a hundred sites and museums after dark at no charge. By our calculation the 2027 full moon falls around 17 August.

💰 Average August hotel prices (central Athens, 4-star, room only):
Early August: ~€140 to €151/night · Around 15 August: ~€154 to €156/night · Late August: ~€139 to €154/night
Live median rates for the 80 most-reviewed four-star hotels within 2 km of Syntagma, two adults, one night, pulled 20 October 2026 for 2027 dates. Room only: the €10 per room per night summer climate resilience fee is extra.
Planning Athens for August 2027? The weather figures here are long-term normals; the hotel rates and tour schedules are for August 2027, while the festival and full-moon dates follow the 2026 pattern or our calculation. August is July with a warmer sea and lower hotel prices. We'd book it for a summer trip built around the coast, with the Acropolis at dawn and a moonlit night if the dates line up.
The heat does not ease until September. If you want the sea and gentler days, early September costs more but gives you the same water at a few degrees cooler.

The August Full Moon, 15 August and the Warmest Sea
The August full moon night
Every August the Greek culture ministry opens archaeological sites, monuments and museums free after dark on the night of the full moon, with concerts and performances at some of them. In 2026 it fell on Friday 28 August, when 126 venues took part, opening from around 19:30 or 20:00 until 23:00 or midnight. By our calculation from the lunar calendar, the 2027 full moon falls around Tuesday 17 August; the ministry had not announced the 2027 date or site list when we checked, so check which sites take part. We'd keep that evening free if it falls in your stay and check the ministry's list in early August.
15 August, the Dormition of the Virgin
The main summer feast in the Orthodox calendar and a public holiday, on a Sunday in 2027. Some shops and offices close. Hotel prices hardly move: €154 on the night.
The warmest sea of the year
At about 26°C the sea is at its peak, and every boat is running. Our Athens catamaran charter guide compares the Riviera cruises, and our Lake Vouliagmeni tour guide the lake and Riviera beaches. The festival season at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus also runs to the end of August in a typical year: in 2026 its last date was 29 August. What to Pack for Athens in August
As for July: the lightest clothes you own for 34°C days and 24°C nights.
- A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen.
- A refillable water bottle. Essential on the sites.
- Swimwear and a quick-dry towel. The sea is at its warmest.
- Breathable shoes with grip. Polished marble is slippery even when dry.
- A light layer for the full-moon night. Evenings on the hills can feel cooler than the streets.
Our Take
The finding we'd plan around is the late-August price floor: the last week of August priced lower than any summer night we sampled, with the same 26°C sea, while the first week of September is sharply dearer.
Tips for Athens in August
- Book late August for value. Wednesday 25 August was the cheapest summer night we found, at €139.

- Watch for the full-moon announcement. The ministry publishes the site list and date in August.
- Price Sounion in August. Our featured tour drops to €56 from July's €66.
- Buy the Acropolis ticket separately if needed. One tour's with-ticket option had no August dates loaded when we checked.

How We Put This Guide Together
Weather figures are the National Observatory of Athens' 1991 to 2020 downtown normals (34.3°C high, 24.4°C low, 5.4 mm, 47% humidity in August), with rain days (1.6) and sunshine (341 hours) from the Hellenic National Meteorological Service's Elliniko normals for 1955 to 2010. Sea temperature is the August average from seatemperature.org; sunrise and sunset are calculated for central Athens in summer time. Hotel prices are live medians, not estimates: the 80 most-reviewed four-star hotels within 2 km of Syntagma, two adults, one night, queried on 20 October 2026, room only. Comparisons with other months use only the 63 hotels that returned a rate on every date in the same pull. The full-moon night is described from the culture ministry's 2026 programme as reported in the press (126 venues, 28 August 2026); the 2027 date is our calculation from the lunar calendar. Every tour named here was checked against the booking platform's partner API on 20 October 2026: all eight are active with August 2027 departures. Activity ratings are editorial judgement; we have not visited Athens in August as a team.
