September keeps summer's sea and loses its worst heat: 30°C days and water still around 25°C. The catch is price, which jumps back to the year's top level on 1 September, and Acropolis hours start to shorten.
What You Should Know
- September is the sweet spot for weather: days ease to about 30°C, the sea stays around 25°C, and rain is still rare. It is the best month to combine the sites, the sea and the long day trips.
- Prices jump on 1 September. The same 63 hotels that priced at €139 on 25 August came in at €179 on 1 September, and central four-star medians ran €174 to €183 all month.
- Acropolis hours start to shorten. Visitor guides give 08:00 to 19:30 for the first half of the month and 08:00 to 19:00 for the second, though sources differ, so check for your date.
- Most people don't realize the last weekend of September is free: state sites, the Acropolis included, are free on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 September 2027, so those are the busiest two days of the month.

Planning Athens for September 2027? The weather figures here are long-term normals; the hotel rates, tour schedules and free weekend are for September 2027, and Acropolis hours come from visitor guides. September is the month we'd pick for a trip that wants everything: the Acropolis in a comfortable afternoon, a swim in 25°C water and the long day trips without summer heat.
The only thing it costs you is money. If price matters, the last week of August gives the same sea for about a fifth less, at the cost of July-level heat.

The Free Weekend, Shorter Acropolis Hours and the Best Day-Trip Month
Free entry on 25 and 26 September
The last weekend of September is one of the fixed free days at Greek state sites, the European Heritage Days. In 2027 that is Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 September. As on every free day, timed entry still applies, and the Acropolis will be at its busiest. We'd use the weekend for the Ancient Agora, the Roman Agora and Kerameikos, and see the Parthenon on a weekday.
Acropolis hours start to shorten
Summer hours close the Acropolis at 20:00, but several visitor guides describe a stepped schedule in September that follows sunset: 08:00 to 19:30 for 1 to 15 September and 08:00 to 19:00 for 16 to 30 September, with last entry half an hour before closing. Others give 20:00 through October. With sources disagreeing, check the official schedule for your date before booking a late slot.
The best month for day trips
September has the light and the temperatures that suit the long trips: about twelve and a half hours of daylight and 30°C rather than 34°C. Our Ancient Corinth tour guide, Mycenae tour guide and Delphi tour guide compare the options. Our guide to the best things to do in Athens covers the rest of the city, from the free hills to the ticketed sites.

How We Put This Guide Together
Weather figures are the National Observatory of Athens' 1991 to 2020 downtown normals (29.6°C high, 20.4°C low, 25.8 mm, 57% humidity in September), with rain days (4.7) and sunshine (276 hours) from the Hellenic National Meteorological Service's Elliniko normals for 1955 to 2010. The sea temperature is the September average from seatemperature.org; sunrise and sunset are calculated for central Athens in summer time. Hotel prices are live medians, not estimates: the 80 most-reviewed four-star hotels within 2 km of Syntagma, two adults, one night, queried on 20 October 2026, room only. Comparisons with other months use only the 63 hotels that returned a rate on every date in the same pull. The free weekend is one of the fixed free days at state sites. Acropolis September hours come from visitor guides, which disagree; the Meltemi note comes from our catamaran guide. Every tour named here was checked against the booking platform's partner API on 20 October 2026: all eight are active with September 2027 departures. Activity ratings are editorial judgement; we have not visited Athens in September as a team.
