October is mild, still sunny and cheaper than September, with a sea warm enough for a swim early in the month. Rain returns, the evenings shorten sharply after the clocks change on 25 October, and 28 October is a free day at state sites.

What You Should Know

  • October is mild rather than hot: days average about 24°C and nights 16°C, with nearly seven hours of sun a day. The sea averages about 22°C, so early-October swims are still comfortable.
  • Rain comes back. October averages about nine rain days, nearly twice September's, though totals stay modest at 39 mm.
  • Clocks go back on Sunday 25 October 2026, and sunset jumps from 18:37 to 17:36 overnight. The 14-hour Meteora day ends well after dark from then on.
  • Most people don't realize Wednesday 28 October, Ohi Day, is a national holiday and a free day at Greek state sites, the Acropolis included, so it is the busiest day of late October on the hill.

Planning Athens for October 2026? The weather figures here are long-term normals; the hotel rates, tour prices and schedules are for October 2026, checked on 20 October with the month already under way, and the Acropolis hours come from visitor guides. October is the month we'd pick for long days on foot: the Acropolis, the Agora and a day trip in mild weather, with a swim still possible early in the month.

The trade-off is light. By the end of the month the sun sets before 17:30, which cuts the longest day trips short.

Athens in October: Prices and Crowds Week by Week

1 to 18 October: a normal-lead-time view

This guide went live on 20 October, so we can't price the first half of October 2026. For a sense of the month with normal booking lead time, our same pull priced early October 2027 dates: Wednesday 6 and Wednesday 13 October 2027 at €162 and €163, against €180 for Wednesday 15 September 2027, at the same 58 hotels. October runs about a tenth below September.

21 to 24 October 2026: the last full-price weekend

Wednesday 21 October priced at €153, Friday 23 at €159 and Saturday 24 at €156.

25 to 28 October 2026: after the clock change

The cheapest stretch we found: Sunday 25 at €133 and Tuesday 27 and Wednesday 28 October at €130. Wednesday 28 is Ohi Day, the free day at state sites.

29 to 31 October 2026: the end of the season

Ohi Day, the Clock Change and the End of the Season

Free entry on Wednesday 28 October

28 October is Ohi Day, a national holiday marking Greece's refusal of the Italian ultimatum in 1940, and one of the Ministry of Culture's fixed free days at state sites and museums. In 2026 it falls on a Wednesday. As on every free day, timed entry still applies and the Acropolis will be busy. Our featured food tour does not run that day.

The clocks go back on 25 October

Summer time ends at 04:00 on Sunday 25 October, and sunset moves from 18:37 to 17:36. Delphi tours leave at 08:15 and take about ten hours, so they return around dusk; the 14-hour Meteora day finishes well after dark.

Acropolis hours

Several visitor guides describe a stepped autumn schedule: 08:00 to 18:30 for 1 to 15 October and 08:00 to 18:00 for 16 to 31 October, with last entry half an hour before closing. Others give 20:00 through October. With sources disagreeing, check the official schedule for your date.

The end of the season

Catamaran day cruises from Alimos run roughly from late April to October, so the last sailings of the year fall this month. On 1 November some Peloponnese tours switch their itinerary, starting at Mycenae rather than Epidaurus, and the €10 summer climate fee for four-star hotels drops to €3.

What we would actually book

For the rest of October 2026, we'd book Delphi first: at €28 it is half its usual price until 31 October, and the site is at its most comfortable. Then the Acropolis on a weekday rather than 28 October, a food walk and a Sounion sunset. Our guide to the best things to do in Athens covers the rest of the city.

What Not to Do in Athens in October

  • Plan the Acropolis for 28 October if you can avoid it. The free day is the busiest of late October.
  • Book Meteora as a day trip after 25 October unless you don't mind the dark. The 14-hour day finishes long after the 17:30 sunset; the overnight option avoids it.
  • Count on a boat day late in the month. The catamaran season ends with October.
  • Assume summer closing times. Several guides describe the Acropolis closing at 18:30 and then 18:00.

More October-Friendly Activities

What to Pack for Athens in October

Light layers for 24°C days and evenings around 16°C.

  • A light jacket. For evenings and for the coach home from a day trip.
  • A compact umbrella or rain layer. About nine rain days in the month.
  • Shoes with grip. The marble paths on the Acropolis are slippery when wet.
  • Swimwear early in the month. The sea is around 22°C on average.

Our Take

The finding we'd plan around is Delphi at half price: Keytours' basic Delphi day is €28 until 31 October 2026 against €56 from 1 November, which makes it the cheapest long day trip in our fixed set this month.

Tips for Athens in October

  • Stay after the clock change for value. 25 to 28 October priced at €130 to €133, the lowest nights we found.
  • Do the long day trips before 25 October. Sunset moves an hour earlier overnight.
  • Use 28 October for the lesser sites. The Agora, the Roman Agora and Kerameikos are free that day too.
  • Check Acropolis hours for your date. Visitor guides give earlier closing through October, and sources differ.
  • Visiting at a different time of year? Our Athens in September guide covers the month before, with a warmer sea at top prices, and our Athens in November guide the month after, when prices fall to near-January levels.

How We Put This Guide Together

Weather figures are the National Observatory of Athens' 1991 to 2020 downtown normals (24.4°C high, 16.2°C low, 38.6 mm, 66% humidity in October), with rain days (8.6) and sunshine (208 hours) from the Hellenic National Meteorological Service's Elliniko normals for 1955 to 2010. The sea temperature is the October average from seatemperature.org; sunrise and sunset are calculated for central Athens, with summer time ending on 25 October 2026. Hotel prices are live medians, not estimates: the 80 most-reviewed four-star hotels within 2 km of Syntagma, two adults, one night, queried on 20 October 2026, room only. With the month under way, October 2026 rates are short-notice; we used early-October 2027 dates in the same pull for the normal-lead-time comparison. Cross-date comparisons use only hotels that returned a rate on every date compared. Ohi Day is on the Ministry of Culture's list of free days at state sites. Acropolis October hours come from visitor guides, which disagree; the catamaran season and the climate fee come from our other Athens guides. Every tour named here was checked against the booking platform's partner API on 20 October 2026, including live availability for late-October dates. Activity ratings are editorial judgement; we have not visited Athens in October as a team.
