Seven private Athens tours compared on price for two and for four, length and who actually leads you. Most are driver-guides who cannot guide you inside the Acropolis, and only one sends a licensed archaeologist.
What You Should Know
- Athens private tours come in three formats: a driver-guide by car for four to eight hours, a licensed archaeologist on foot at the Acropolis for 90 minutes to three hours, or a walk or tuk-tuk.
- Car tours start between 07:00 and 11:00 with hotel or cruise-port pickup and are planned around a timed Acropolis slot. The €30 ticket is extra on almost every tour, so book it immediately.
- Prices are per person but tiered by group size: €69 to €180 each for two, falling to €35 to €130 each for four. A licensed Acropolis guide costs almost the same in total for four as for two.
- Most drivers cannot guide inside the Acropolis. Four of the seven operators say so, and it is the top complaint in low-rated reviews, from guests who expected someone beside them at the Parthenon.
Private Tours in Athens: What You Are Actually Booking
An Athens private tour is usually a car and a driver, not a guide. The driver collects you from your hotel or cruise ship, takes you around the Acropolis, the Panathenaic Stadium, Syntagma and Plaka, and talks about the history between stops. At the archaeological sites, though, most drivers stop at the gate: Greek law reserves guiding inside sites and museums for state-licensed guides, and four of the seven operators below say plainly that their drivers do not hold that licence.
Searching for a private tour guide in Athens? Decide first whether you want someone explaining the Parthenon to you while you stand in front of it. If you do, you need a licensed guide (WARMPENGUIN's archaeologists below, or the licensed guide that Xenon and Olive Sea Travel can add on request). If you mostly want comfort, hotel pickup and a flexible route, a driver-guide does that well and costs less. Across the low-rated reviews of the car tours here, the complaint that recurs most is guests realising on the day that the driver would not come into the Acropolis, then watching other groups listen to their own guides.
Below we compare seven private tours in three formats: driver-guide tours by car, a licensed archaeologist on foot at the Acropolis, and two lighter options (a neighbourhood walk and an electric tuk-tuk). Prices are live per-person rates for a private booking of two, checked on 14 October 2026, with what four people pay further down. For group tours of the same sites, see our Acropolis tour guide and our guide to Athens walking tours.

This follows Xenon Travel Greece's eight-hour itinerary. The order bends to your timed Acropolis slot, and the other driver tours cover much the same ground in four to five hours, dropping the Agora and the long lunch.
Our take (book the ticket around the tour): The Acropolis slot is the fixed point of the day. Choose the earliest start the operator offers, 08:00 on Xenon's tour, and book a ticket for the first hour after pickup, so you are on the rock before the cruise groups and the midday heat. The main tradeoff is that a fixed slot ends the queue but not the traffic: if pickup runs late, the rest of the day bends around it, and that is where missed stops come from.
Our take (the Changing of the Guard): This is where a driver earns their fee. Guests repeatedly mention being taken to a less crowded spot, or told exactly where to stand, for a close view of the Evzones at Syntagma.
The Best Private Tours in Athens
Grouped by what you get for the money, with the top pick highlighted. Prices are per person for two. We'd give the edge to a car tour for cruise passengers and mixed-age families, who need the pickup and the seat between stops, and to the licensed archaeologist for anyone whose trip is built around the Parthenon.
Xenon Travel Greece: Athens Full Day Private Tour
€155 for four hours or €180 for eight, rated 4.99 from 1,238 reviews with one review below four stars. The full day covers the Acropolis, the Panathenaic Stadium, the Changing of the Guard at Syntagma, Areopagus Hill, the Ancient Agora and Plaka, with a long lunch break at the end. The driver helps you skip the ticket queue but cannot guide inside the sites; a licensed guide can be added on request. We like this option for first-timers with one day: unplanned extra stops, lunch tips and a quieter spot for the Changing of the Guard come up again and again in its reviews.
Check availabilityWARMPENGUIN: Acropolis PRIVATE Tour with Licensed Expert
The only tour here led by state-licensed archaeologists, who guide you through the Propylaea, the Parthenon and the Erechtheion. The Acropolis-only tour is 90 minutes at €149; the Acropolis with the Museum or the Ancient Agora is three hours at €191. A five-hour version adds a vehicle, hotel or cruise-port transfers and the city highlights. You meet at the Akropoli metro exit, and tickets are extra. With the Museum option, starting in the museum works well: you see the original sculptures up close before seeing where they stood. Guide style varies, and a few guests found the commentary thin between stops.
Check availabilityTheodores Private Tours: Best of Athens Half Day
6,613 reviews at 4.9, the largest record by far. A Mercedes E-Class for up to four, a minivan for five to eight, and pickup anywhere in Athens, including the airport and the ports. Four hours with no meal is €110; with lunch it is €140, and the taverna is a drive out of the centre, which eats into sightseeing time. The chauffeur gives commentary but is not licensed inside monuments. Local guides speaking Spanish, French, German, Italian, Mandarin and more are available on request. A party of four goes in the sedan with three in the back, so consider the minivan for a long day.
Check availabilityOlive Sea Travel: Athens Full Day Private Tour
An eight-hour day around the Acropolis, the Ancient Agora and the Acropolis Museum, at 4.9 from 3,455 reviews. The basic private option is €127.50 after a 15 percent discount, without tickets or lunch. The All Inclusive option, at €322.50, adds entrance fees and lunch, the only package here that bundles both. A licensed guide costs €350 extra, and guests who added one, older travellers especially, were glad of the help on the Acropolis. Pre-booked tickets mean no queue at any site; the trade-off is a fixed entry time that a late start can forfeit.
Check availabilityColours of Greece: Private Acropolis & City Highlights
Four hours with hotel or port pickup for €120 between November and April, rising to €139.71 from April to October. The route covers the Acropolis, the Panathenaic Stadium, the Evzone Changing of the Guard and Monastiraki, and five-hour versions add the Acropolis Museum or the Ancient Agora. Groups are capped at seven, in a sedan for one to four. Drivers brief you before each site, and several carry illustrated books of the ruins as they once stood. The ticket link arrives by WhatsApp, and guests who missed it lost time buying tickets on the day. Rated 4.9 from 362 reviews.
Check availabilityTUK TUK ATHENS: Electric Tuk Tuk City Center Tour
Three hours in an open electric tuk-tuk for €96, picking you up within 2 km of Syntagma. It climbs Lycabettus Hill for the city view, stops at the Panathenaic Stadium, the Parliament and the Roman Agora, and rolls through Plaka. It does not go up the Acropolis, so pair it with a guided Acropolis visit. It suits limited mobility and children who will not walk far, but the seats face each other and the ride over cobbles is bumpy, and a few tours have finished early. Booking is for ages 13 and up as listed.
Check availabilityWithlocals: Off the Beaten Track Private Walking Tour
The cheapest private guide here at €69, for two and a half hours on foot through Strefi Hill and Psiri with a local host who chooses the rest of the route. It skips the ticketed sites, so it works best once you have done the Acropolis, and repeat visitors say it showed them a side of the city they had not seen. Rated 4.8 from 316 reviews, with fewer recent reviews than the others (15 in the past year); the poor ones, mostly from 2022 to 2024, are about individual hosts, so the guide you get matters.

Driver-Guide or Licensed Private Guide?
This is the decision that separates the tours above, and the listings make it easy to miss. In Greece, only guides licensed by the state may guide at archaeological sites and museums. A driver can tell you about the Parthenon in the car; once you are through the gate, you are on your own unless a licensed guide is with you.
| Tour | Who leads | Inside the Acropolis | Adding a licensed guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xenon Travel Greece | English-speaking driver | Not certified to accompany you | On request, subject to availability |
| Theodores Private Tours | Chauffeur with local commentary | Not licensed inside monuments | Local guides in other languages on request; licence not stated |
| Olive Sea Travel | Driver | Not licensed inside sites or the museum | €350 extra, subject to availability |
| Colours of Greece | Driver with historical knowledge | Not licensed inside sites | Not listed |
| WARMPENGUIN | State-licensed archaeologist | Guides you throughout | Included |
| TUK TUK ATHENS | Driver-guide | Does not visit | Not listed |
| Withlocals | Local guide on foot | Does not visit | Not applicable |
When a driver-guide is the right call
If you have read up on the Acropolis, are happy with a self-guided visit or an audio guide, or mainly want to cover a lot of ground without metro changes, a driver tour is the efficient choice. It suits cruise passengers on a fixed schedule, families with young children and anyone with limited mobility. Xenon, Olive Sea, Colours of Greece and Theodores all list their tours as wheelchair accessible.
What typically happens on the driver tours is a short briefing in the car, a drop-off at the gate, a time to be back, and the driver waiting with the vehicle. Most were happy with that. The ones who were not had expected someone beside them on the rock. We'd look elsewhere if you are staying near Plaka: a car tour between sites you could walk to spends much of its time in traffic, and some guests said they had already walked most of the route.
When you want a licensed guide
If the Parthenon is the reason you came, the 90 minutes on the rock are where a guide adds most. WARMPENGUIN's archaeologists are licensed to guide there, and the five-hour vehicle option adds the city highlights and transfers, so you get both in one booking. The alternative is a driver tour plus a licensed guide added on request (Xenon and Olive Sea Travel offer this), which you should arrange as soon as you book because availability is limited.
How Much Does a Private Tour in Athens Cost?
Private tours in Athens are priced per person on a sliding scale: the more of you there are, the less each person pays. That makes the "from" price misleading for couples and solo travellers, and the totals below more useful. Add €30 per person for the Acropolis ticket on every tour except Olive Sea Travel's All Inclusive option. Most people don't realize that on Olive Sea Travel's listed rates, four people pay less in total (€240) than two (€300).
Withlocals' private walk at €138 for two (€69 each) and the TUK TUK ATHENS city tour at €192 for two (€96 each). Neither includes the Acropolis.
Theodores at €220 for four hours, Colours of Greece at €240 (November to April) or €279.42 (April to October), Olive Sea Travel's full day at €255 after its discount, WARMPENGUIN's licensed Acropolis tour at €298, and Xenon's four-hour tour at €310.
Xenon's eight-hour day at €360, Olive Sea's All Inclusive option with tickets and lunch at €645, and WARMPENGUIN's five-hour licensed tour with a vehicle at €878.
For four people the per-person price falls sharply: Withlocals €35, Theodores €55 for four hours, Olive Sea €60 at its listed rate, WARMPENGUIN €77 and Xenon €130 for four hours. We think the tradeoff is clearest at four: the licensed archaeologist costs €77 each, well under the €130 each for the top-rated car tour, so a group that only needs the Acropolis gets the expert for less.
Our Take
What we consistently see in reviews is that the Acropolis ticket slot, more than the operator, decides how the day goes: guests with a confirmed early slot got through everything, while those who arrived without one lost an hour or dropped stops.
Tips for Booking a Private Tour in Athens
- Ask who is leading the tour before you book. If the listing says driver, expect to visit the Acropolis on your own. If you want a guide there, book WARMPENGUIN or request a licensed guide straight away. From what we've seen in reviews and operator details, this one question would have prevented most of the disappointed reviews.
- Book your Acropolis ticket for a specific slot. Entry is timed and costs €30. Colours of Greece suggests buying a few days ahead at hhticket.gr; WARMPENGUIN and Theodores offer to arrange it for you after booking.
- Watch your messages after booking. Several operators send ticket links and pickup details by WhatsApp. Guests who missed them arrived at the Acropolis without a slot and lost an hour of a paid tour.
- Compare ticket prices before letting the operator buy them. In one review a ticket purchase arranged through the operator cost about a third more than buying the same tickets on the official site.
- Leave slack on cruise days. Athens traffic can turn a five-stop tour into two stops, and a fixed check-in time leaves no room to recover. If your hotel is central, the licensed walking option avoids the problem.
- Do not run late on ticket days. Olive Sea Travel warns that its timed tickets can be lost if you miss the slot, and new ones are at your own cost.
- Price your actual group size. Two people pay the most per head on every tour here. Check the four- or six-person rate before you rule out a private tour as too expensive.
- Cruise passengers: confirm port pickup. Xenon, Theodores, Olive Sea and Colours of Greece pick up at the port; WARMPENGUIN's vehicle option does too. The walking and tuk-tuk tours do not.
- Allow for strikes. Theodores notes that a strike or special event in the centre can move the start time or route, which happens in Athens from time to time.
- Wear proper shoes. The marble on the Acropolis is polished and slippery, and WARMPENGUIN warns that the walk between the Acropolis and the Agora is on rough cobbles.
- Going further afield? Several of these operators also run private day trips. See our Delphi tour guide, our Temple of Poseidon guide and the Meteora day tour guide.
How We Selected These Tours
The Greece Trip Insider team looked at every private tour of central Athens with more than 100 reviews, leaving out airport transfers, day trips out of the city and food or cooking experiences, which we cover in separate guides. We checked all seven live listings on 14 October 2026, including their prices by group size, options, schedules, inclusions, exclusions and full star distributions, and excluded any tour without a guest review in the past six months. We chose tours that cover the main formats (driver-guide by car, a licensed archaeologist, a walk and a tuk-tuk) rather than five versions of the same car tour. The top pick weighs review quality and volume, flexibility, inclusions and how clearly the operator explains who leads the tour. Where operators run several options, we quote the cheapest private option and name the alternatives.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a private tour of Athens cost?+
For two people, from €69 each for a private walking tour to €155 to €180 each for a private tour by car, checked October 2026. Prices are per person but fall as the group grows, so four people pay €35 to €130 each. The €30 Acropolis ticket is usually extra.
Can a private driver guide me inside the Acropolis?+
No. Only state-licensed guides may guide inside archaeological sites in Greece, and the driver-guide operators compared here say their drivers do not hold that licence. They drop you at the entrance and wait. For a guide at the Parthenon, book a licensed guide such as WARMPENGUIN's archaeologists, or ask your driver tour to add one.
How do I hire a private tour guide in Athens?+
Book a tour that names a licensed guide, such as WARMPENGUIN's private Acropolis tour at €149 each for two, or add a licensed guide to a driver tour. Olive Sea Travel charges €350 extra for one on its full day, and Xenon arranges one on request, subject to availability.
Is the Acropolis ticket included in private tours?+
Usually not. The €30 timed ticket is extra on every tour here except Olive Sea Travel's All Inclusive option, which also includes lunch. WARMPENGUIN and Theodores offer to buy tickets for you after booking, and Xenon's driver helps you skip the ticket queue.
How long is a private tour of Athens?+
Most private tours by car run four to five hours, and full days run eight. WARMPENGUIN's licensed Acropolis tour is 90 minutes, or three hours with the Museum or Ancient Agora. The tuk-tuk tour is three hours and the Withlocals walk two and a half.
Do private Athens tours pick up from the cruise port?+
Most driver tours do. Xenon Travel Greece, Theodores Private Tours, Olive Sea Travel and Colours of Greece all list port pickup, including Piraeus, and WARMPENGUIN's vehicle option includes cruise-port transfers. The walking and tuk-tuk tours start in the centre.
Is a private tour of Athens worth it?+
For three or more people it often is, because the per-person price falls with group size. For four, WARMPENGUIN's private licensed Acropolis tour costs €77 each, and Theodores' four-hour car tour €55 each. For a couple on a budget, a group Acropolis tour plus the metro covers the same sites for less.
