March is when Athens' calendar fills: Carnival peaks, Clean Monday and Independence Day bring two public holidays, and state sites are free on three days. Hotels are still well below spring rates, and the clocks go forward on the 28th.

What You Should Know

  • March 2027 is Carnival month in Athens: Smoky Thursday on 4 March, the Patras parades on 13 and 14 March, and Clean Monday, a public holiday of kites and picnics, on 15 March.
  • Independence Day on Thursday 25 March closes the Acropolis and pauses several tours. Winter site hours (Acropolis 08:00 to 17:00) last until 31 March, and the clocks go forward on 28 March.
  • Hotels climb through the month: central four-star medians ran €108 to €123 in our live sample, about a fifth above January but still well below May's €180.
  • Most people don't realize March has three free days at state sites: Saturday 6 March, a fixed free day, plus the free first and third Sundays, which by our calculation are 7 and 21 March.

Athens in March: Is It Worth It?

⭐ Best-value March window, based on our hotel sample: midweek in the first half of the month. Wednesdays priced at €108 to €111 in early March against €117 to €120 by the last week, and Saturdays at €121 to €123 all month. This is a price finding, not a weather claim.

CrowdsFavourable. Still quiet, busier on the free days and holiday weekends

💰 Average March hotel prices (central Athens, 4-star, room only):
Early March midweek: ~€108 to €111/night · Late March midweek: ~€117 to €120/night · Saturdays: ~€121 to €123/night
Live median rates for the 80 most-reviewed four-star hotels within 2 km of Syntagma, two adults, one night, pulled 19 October 2026 for 2027 dates. Room only: the €3 per room per night winter climate resilience fee applies to 31 March.

Planning Athens for March 2027? The weather figures here are long-term normals; the hotel rates, tour schedules, holidays and free days are for March 2027. March is the month the city wakes up: the days pass twelve hours, Carnival fills the streets, and two public holidays give you the Athens that Athenians celebrate. We'd book it for anyone who wants festivals with their ruins, and for a first visit that wants more light than winter without spring prices.

Plan around two dates. Clean Monday (15 March) and Independence Day (25 March) both close shops and pause some tours, and the Acropolis is shut on the 25th. If those days fall in your trip, use them for the celebrations rather than the sites.

Temperatures, rainfall and humidity are the National Observatory of Athens' 1991 to 2020 downtown normals; rain days and sunshine are the Hellenic National Meteorological Service's Elliniko normals (1955 to 2010); sea temperature is the March average from seatemperature.org.

Temperature and Humidity

March is the first month that feels like spring: days around 17°C, three degrees warmer than February, and nights around 9°C. The record March high downtown is 28.2°C, so a warm week is possible, but evenings still need a jacket, and the sea, at about 15°C, is as cold as it gets all year.

Rain Pattern

Rain falls on about 11 days, around 46 mm in total, much like February. The difference is the sun between showers: nearly six hours a day against under five in February, so wet spells clear faster.

Daylight and Outdoor Conditions

Sunset moves from 18:17 on 1 March to 18:42 on the 27th, then jumps to 19:43 when Greece moves to summer time on Sunday 28 March. Days pass twelve hours by the end of the month. The catch is that site opening hours do not follow the clocks until 1 April: the Acropolis keeps its 17:00 winter closing through 31 March, even when the sun is up until nearly eight.

Athens in March: Prices and Crowds Week by Week

1 to 7 March: Smoky Thursday and a free weekend

Our sample ran €108 on Wednesday 3 March and €114 on Smoky Thursday (4 March), when Athens grills meat in the streets and tavernas fill. Saturday 6 March (€121) and Sunday 7 March are both free days at state sites, so that weekend is the busiest on the Acropolis this month. The Athens Half Marathon ran on 8 March in 2026; its 2027 date had not been announced when we checked.

8 to 15 March: Carnival weekend and Clean Monday

The price peak of Carnival is modest: €121 on Saturday 13 March, €114 on Sunday 14 and €112 on Clean Monday.

16 to 31 March: Independence Day and the clock change

Rates edge up to €114 to €117 midweek and €123 on Saturdays. Thursday 25 March, Independence Day, priced at €120. Sunday 21 March is the month's last free Sunday, and the clocks go forward on the 28th.

Against the rest of the year: the same 67 hotels priced at €111 to €114 in mid-March, against €93 in mid-January and €180 in mid-May. March is the start of the climb, not the climb itself.

Carnival, Clean Monday and Independence Day

Greek Carnival follows Orthodox Easter, which is on 2 May in 2027, so this year it peaks in March. The dates below are our calculation from the Easter date and the published Clean Monday; confirm local programmes nearer the time.

Sun 21 MarFree third Sunday (our calculation)The last free day of the winter scheme
Thu 25 MarIndependence Day; public holidayMilitary parade in central Athens; the Acropolis is closed

Clean Monday on Filopappou Hill

The best free thing to do in Athens all month. Families climb Filopappou Hill, opposite the Acropolis, to fly kites, and tavernas serve the Lenten meal of lagana bread, taramosalata and seafood. It is also a public holiday, so expect most shops to close and some tours to pause: our featured Corinth tour does not run that day.

Independence Day on 25 March

The national holiday marks the start of the 1821 War of Independence with a military parade in the centre. The Acropolis is closed, and several tours in our set, including the food walk and the Delphi day trip, have no departures. Treat it as a day for the parade and a long lunch rather than the sites.

Three free days at state sites

6 March is one of the fixed free days at Greek state sites. The first and third Sundays from November to March are free too under ΦΕΚ Β' 1968/2024, which by our calculation makes 7 and 21 March free. That gives three free days, two of them back to back. As in winter, timed entry still applies, and the Acropolis Museum sets its own free days.

What we would actually book

March is the month to add a full day out. The Acropolis on a weekday, a food walk and the Acropolis Museum still form the core, but with the hills green and twelve hours of light, Delphi becomes the easy fourth day. We'd book this if your dates include 15 March: spend the morning on Filopappou with the kites and the afternoon on Lenten seafood, and keep the sites for the weekdays either side.

For a four-day March trip, we'd book the Acropolis tour, the food walk and Delphi, and keep Clean Monday or Independence Day free for the celebrations if your dates include them.

What Not to Do in Athens in March

  • Plan the Acropolis for 25 March. It is closed on Independence Day, and the food walk and Delphi trip pause too.
  • Count on summer hours. Even after the clocks change on 28 March, the Acropolis closes at 17:00 until 31 March.
  • Expect to swim in the sea. At about 15°C it is at its coldest. Lake Vouliagmeni is the alternative; our Lake Vouliagmeni tour guide covers it.
  • Book a Riviera catamaran. The Alimos season starts roughly in late April; our Athens catamaran charter guide covers it.

More March-Friendly Activities

  • A bike tour. Mild days and quiet streets suit cycling; our Athens bike tour guide compares them.
  • The Independence Day parade. Free on 25 March in the centre of Athens.
  • A hop-on hop-off bus. An easy way to cover the city on a showery day; our Athens hop-on hop-off guide compares the passes.
  • The National Archaeological Museum. One of the world's great collections of ancient Greek art, and the plan for a wet afternoon.

What to Pack for Athens in March

Spring clothes with a winter backup: days around 17°C, nights around 9°C and rain on about 11 days.

  • A light jacket and a warm layer. Afternoons can be T-shirt weather; evenings are not.
  • A compact umbrella or rain shell. Showers come and go quickly.
  • Shoes with grip. Marble paths on the Acropolis and Filopappou are slippery after rain.
  • Sun protection. Nearly six hours of sun a day reflects hard off white marble.

Our Take

The pattern we'd plan around is that March's two holidays are the best and worst days of the month at once: Clean Monday and Independence Day are when Athens celebrates, and also when the Acropolis, the shops and several tours close, so build them into the trip as festival days, not sightseeing days.

Tips for Athens in March

  • Book early March midweek for value. Wednesdays were €108 to €111 in early March and €117 to €120 by the end of the month.
  • Use the free days for the lesser sites. On 6, 7 and 21 March the Acropolis will be busy; the Agora and Kerameikos make the most of free entry.
  • Check holiday closures before booking. Our featured Corinth tour skips 15 and 25 March, and the food walk and Delphi trip skip the 25th.
  • Book Smoky Thursday dinner. Tavernas fill on 4 March.
  • Price Sounion from 1 March. Our featured Sounion tour rises from €35.50 to €56 at the start of the month.
  • Visiting at a different time of year? Our Athens in February guide covers the month before, with winter prices and the opening of Carnival, and our Athens in April guide the month after, when summer hours start and Holy Week begins. For what to do in any month, see our guide to the best things to do in Athens.

How We Put This Guide Together

Weather figures are the National Observatory of Athens' 1991 to 2020 downtown normals (17.0°C high, 9.2°C low, 45.6 mm, 66% humidity in March), with rain days (11.3) and sunshine (183 hours) from the Hellenic National Meteorological Service's Elliniko normals for 1955 to 2010. Sea temperature is the March average from seatemperature.org; sunrise and sunset are calculated for central Athens, including the move to summer time on 28 March. Hotel prices are live medians, not estimates: the 80 most-reviewed four-star hotels within 2 km of Syntagma, two adults, one night, queried on 19 October 2026, room only. Our January and May comparisons use only the 67 hotels that returned a rate on every date. Carnival dates are calculated from Orthodox Easter on 2 May 2027, with Clean Monday on 15 March. Free Sundays follow ΦΕΚ Β' 1968/2024 and the 2027 dates are our calculation; 6 March is a fixed free day. The Half Marathon date given is 2026's, as 2027 was not announced. Every tour named here was checked against the booking platform's partner API on 19 October 2026: all eight are active with March 2027 departures, and the holiday gaps are taken from their published schedules. Activity ratings are editorial judgement; we have not visited Athens in March as a team.
