February keeps January's low hotel prices and quiet ruins but hands back an hour of daylight. The Carnival season opens on 21 February, though its big days fall in March.

What You Should Know

  • February prices Athens like January. Central four-star hotels in our live sample ran a median €92 to €106 a night all month, against €179 at the same hotels in mid-May.
  • Daylight grows by an hour across the month: sunset moves from 17:46 on 1 February to 18:16 on the 28th, so half-day trips and late-afternoon walks get noticeably easier.
  • Winter rules still apply. The Acropolis opens 08:00 to 17:00 until 31 March, Delphi closes at 15:30, and the big Meteora monasteries shut on different weekdays.
  • Most people don't realize February 2027 has no Carnival peak. The season opens on 21 February, but Smoky Thursday, the Patras parades and Clean Monday all fall in March.

Athens in February: Is It Worth It?

⭐ Best-value February window, based on our hotel sample: any midweek night. Wednesdays priced at €92 to €93 all month against €101 to €106 on Saturdays, with the Valentine's weekend (13 to 14 February) the dearest at €105 to €106. This is a price finding, not a weather claim.

PricesVery favourable. Level with January and about half the May rate

💰 Average February hotel prices (central Athens, 4-star, room only):
Midweek: ~€92 to €93/night · Saturdays: ~€101/night · Valentine's weekend: ~€105 to €106/night
Live median rates for the 80 most-reviewed four-star hotels within 2 km of Syntagma, two adults, one night, pulled 19 October 2026 for 2027 dates. Room only: the €3 per room per night winter climate resilience fee is extra.

Planning Athens for February 2027? The weather figures here are long-term normals; the hotel rates, tour schedules, free Sundays and Carnival dates are for February 2027. February is January with better light: the same prices and empty ruins, an hour more daylight by the end of the month and slightly less rain. We'd book it for a first visit built around the Acropolis and the museums, and we'd take it over January if your trip includes a half day out of the city.

It is still the wrong month for beaches and boats, and the wrong month for Carnival in 2027, which peaks in March. If that is the trip, see our Athens in January guide for the winter pattern and plan Carnival for the first half of March. For everything else, start with our guide to the best things to do in Athens.

Temperatures, rainfall and humidity are the National Observatory of Athens' 1991 to 2020 downtown normals; rain days and sunshine are the Hellenic National Meteorological Service's Elliniko normals (1955 to 2010); sea temperature is the February average from seatemperature.org.

Temperature and Humidity

February is barely warmer than January on average, about a degree by day, but the record February high downtown is 25.3°C, and a run of mild, bright days is common enough that Greeks have a name for the calm winter spell, the Halcyon days. Cold northerlies still arrive for a few days at a time and feel sharp on the exposed Acropolis hill.

Rain Pattern

Rain falls on about 11 days, totalling around 44 mm, which makes February slightly drier than January and much drier than December. It usually comes in spells of a few hours rather than all day, so a wet morning rarely costs you the afternoon.

Daylight and Outdoor Conditions

This is February's real improvement. Sunrise moves from 07:30 to 07:00 and sunset from 17:46 to 18:16, so the day grows from about ten hours and a quarter to eleven and a quarter. By late February the Temple of Poseidon sunset is closer to 18:00 than 17:15, and a half day to Corinth or Sounion no longer feels squeezed.

Athens in February: Prices and Crowds Week by Week

1 to 12 February: the quietest stretch

No holidays and no events. Our sample ran €92 on Wednesday 3 February and €101 on Saturday 6 February, and Sunday 7 February is a free day at state sites.

13 to 14 February: Valentine's weekend

The only bump in the month, and a small one: €105 on Saturday 13 and €106 on Sunday 14 February. Restaurants fill on the 14th, so book dinner, but the hotels barely notice.

15 to 28 February: the sales end and Carnival begins

Rates go back to €93 midweek and €101 on Saturdays. The winter sales usually run to the end of February, and Sunday 21 February is both a free day at state sites and, by the Orthodox calendar, the opening of the Triodion, the three weeks of Carnival before Lent.

Against the rest of the year: the same 65 hotels that priced at €93 in mid-February came in at €91 in mid-January and €179 in mid-May, so February and January are one price season. As in January, about a quarter of hotels quote the same rate on weekdays and weekends, so the midweek saving is real but small.

Free Sundays, the Last of the Sales and the Start of Carnival

Free entry on 7 and 21 February

State archaeological sites, monuments and museums are free on the first and third Sundays from November to March under ministerial decision ΦΕΚ Β' 1968/2024. By our calculation that is Sunday 7 and Sunday 21 February 2027; the ministry had not published a 2027 calendar when we checked. The Acropolis Museum is not included, and timed entry still applies. We'd spend a free Sunday on the Ancient Agora, the Roman Agora and Kerameikos, and see the Parthenon on a quiet weekday instead.

The last weeks of the winter sales

The Greek winter sales usually run from the second Monday of January to the end of February, so the final reductions fall in February. Ermou Street and the shops around Syntagma are the centre of it.

Carnival season: opens in February, peaks in March

Greek Carnival follows Orthodox Easter, which falls on 2 May in 2027, so the season is late. The Triodion opens on Sunday 21 February, Smoky Thursday (Tsiknopempti, when the city grills meat in the streets) falls on 4 March, the main Patras Carnival weekend on 13 and 14 March, and Clean Monday on 15 March, a public holiday when Athenians fly kites on Filopappou Hill. Those March dates are our calculation from the Easter date; confirm local programmes nearer the time. Our take: if Carnival is the reason for your trip, book early March, not February.

What we would actually book

The same core as January, with one more half day. A food walk on your first morning, the Acropolis on a weekday, the Acropolis Museum on the first wet afternoon and a free Sunday in the Agora fill three days; February's longer light makes a fourth-day trip to Corinth or Sounion the easy addition. We like the food walk for February in particular: it is mostly indoors, runs six days a week and is the best-reviewed tour in our set.

What Not to Do in Athens in February

  • Plan a Carnival trip. In 2027 the season only opens on 21 February; the big days (Smoky Thursday on 4 March, the Patras weekend of 13 and 14 March, Clean Monday on 15 March) are all in March.
  • Expect to swim. The sea is around 15°C. Lake Vouliagmeni, which operators say stays near 22°C, is the winter swim; our Lake Vouliagmeni tour guide covers it.
  • Book a Riviera catamaran. The Alimos season runs roughly late April to October.
  • Do Meteora midweek. In winter Great Meteoron closes Tuesday to Thursday and Varlaam Thursday and Friday; our Meteora day tour guide lists every monastery's closing days.

More February-Friendly Activities

  • A cooking class. Indoors, warm and unaffected by the weather; our Athens cooking class guide compares them.
  • The National Archaeological Museum. One of the world's great collections of ancient Greek art, and the obvious wet-day plan.
  • A wine tasting. Our Athens wine tasting guide compares the tastings in central Athens.
  • Lycabettus at sunset. With sunset around 18:00 by late February, it fits before dinner.

What to Pack for Athens in February

Much the same as January: days around 14°C, nights around 7°C and rain on about 11 days.

  • Layers and a light waterproof. Mild, bright afternoons and cold evenings can fall on the same day.
  • Shoes with grip. Wet marble on the Acropolis and in Plaka is slippery.
  • Something warm for the hill. A northerly on the Acropolis feels several degrees colder than the streets.
  • Sunglasses. Low winter sun on white marble is bright on clear days.

Our Take

February is the month we'd pick over January for most winter trips: the hotels cost the same, but the extra hour of daylight by the end of the month turns half-day trips from a squeeze into a comfortable afternoon.

Tips for Athens in February

  • Stay midweek. Wednesdays priced at €92 to €93 all month against €101 to €106 on weekends.
  • Book Valentine's dinner, not just the hotel. The hotels barely move on 13 and 14 February; the popular restaurants do fill.
  • Use 7 and 21 February for the lesser sites. By our calculation they are free; the Agora and Kerameikos make the most of it.
  • Leave late-February for half days. Sunset is half an hour later on the 28th than on the 1st.
  • Read the Delphi options. €56 excludes the site ticket and lunch; €105 adds tickets and €125 adds both.
  • Visiting at a different time of year? Our Athens in January guide covers the month before, when New Year prices and Epiphany shape the first week, and our Athens in March guide the month after, when Carnival peaks and Clean Monday falls on 15 March.

How We Put This Guide Together

Weather figures are the National Observatory of Athens' 1991 to 2020 downtown normals (14.2°C high, 7.3°C low, 44.4 mm, 70% humidity in February), with rain days (11.4) and sunshine (134 hours) from the Hellenic National Meteorological Service's Elliniko normals for 1955 to 2010. Sea temperature is the February average from seatemperature.org, and sunrise and sunset are calculated for central Athens. Hotel prices are live medians, not estimates: the 80 most-reviewed four-star hotels within 2 km of Syntagma, two adults, one night, queried on 19 October 2026, room only. Our January and May comparisons use only the 65 hotels that returned a rate on every date. Free Sundays follow ΦΕΚ Β' 1968/2024; the 2027 dates are our calculation. Carnival dates are calculated from Orthodox Easter on 2 May 2027, with Clean Monday on 15 March. Every tour named here was checked against the booking platform's partner API on 19 October 2026: all eight are active with February 2027 departures. Activity ratings are editorial judgement; we have not visited Athens in February as a team.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Athens good in February?+

When is the best-value time to visit Athens in February?+

What are the best things to do in Athens in February?+

A food walking tour, the Acropolis on a weekday, the Acropolis Museum and National Archaeological Museum on wet days, and the Agora on a free Sunday. February's longer light also suits a half day to Cape Sounion or Ancient Corinth.

Not in 2027. Carnival follows Orthodox Easter, which falls on 2 May, so the season only opens on 21 February. Smoky Thursday is on 4 March, the main Patras Carnival weekend on 13 and 14 March, and Clean Monday on 15 March, by our calculation from the Easter date.
