Summer hours from 1 April

April is when Athens switches to summer: the Acropolis opens until 20:00, the days pass thirteen hours and the boats start sailing. Hotels sit between winter and May, and Orthodox Holy Week fills the last week of the month.

What You Should Know

  • April is the switch to summer. The Acropolis moves to 08:00 to 20:00 on 1 April, sunset passes 20:00 by mid-month, and the Riviera catamarans start sailing in late April.
  • Hotels step up but stay below May: central four-star medians ran €139 to €148 a night through April in our live sample, against €91 in January and €180 in May at the same hotels.
  • Orthodox Holy Week runs 25 April to 1 May 2027, with Good Friday on the 30th. Easter Sunday is 2 May, and Saturday 1 May, Holy Saturday and Labour Day at once, priced at €186.
  • Most people don't realize the climate resilience fee jumps on 1 April: four-star hotels charge €10 per room per night from April to October, against €3 in winter.

Planning Athens for April 2027? The weather figures here are long-term normals; the hotel rates, tour schedules and Holy Week dates are for April 2027. April is the month we'd pick for a first visit if the budget allows: the Acropolis is open until 20:00 in 21°C air, the hills are green, and every day trip has the light to do it properly. You pay for it: about 50% more than winter, though still a fifth less than May.

The month splits in two. The first three weeks are spring at its most reliable, with flat prices. The last week is Holy Week, the most important festival of the Orthodox year, which brings processions, closures and the jump to May prices.

Temperatures, rainfall and humidity are the National Observatory of Athens' 1991 to 2020 downtown normals; rain days and sunshine are the Hellenic National Meteorological Service's Elliniko normals (1955 to 2010); sea temperature is the April average from seatemperature.org.

Temperature and Humidity

April is the biggest warming of the year: days around 21°C, four degrees up on March, and nights around 12°C. It is warm enough for a T-shirt at midday and cool enough to climb the Acropolis without the summer heat. The record April high downtown is 32.2°C, so a hot spell is possible late in the month.

Rain Pattern

Rain falls on about 9 days but totals only around 28 mm, so showers are short and light. Sunshine jumps to nearly eight hours a day, from under six in March.

Daylight and Sea

Sunrise moves from 07:12 to 06:31 and sunset from 19:47 to 20:13, so days run from about twelve and a half to nearly fourteen hours. The sea lags well behind the air at about 16°C: the boats start running in late April, but swimming is for the hardy until June.

Athens in April: Prices and Crowds Week by Week

1 to 17 April: spring at a flat price

Our sample ran €139 to €140 on Wednesdays and €142 to €146 on Saturdays, with almost no movement across the weeks. Summer site hours and the higher climate fee both start on 1 April.

18 to 24 April: a free Sunday and the run-up to Easter

Sunday 18 April, International Monuments Day, is a free day at state sites, and priced at €140. Midweek stays at €140 and Saturday 24 April at €144.

25 April to 1 May: Holy Week

Palm Sunday on 25 April opens Holy Week. Prices tick up to €142 on Wednesday 28 and €148 on Holy Thursday and Good Friday (29 and 30 April), then jump to €186 on Saturday 1 May, when Holy Saturday and Labour Day fall together. Easter Sunday, 2 May, and Easter Monday, 3 May, follow in the next month.

Against the rest of the year: the same 65 hotels priced at €140 in mid-April, against €91 in mid-January, €120 in late March and €180 in mid-May. April is the halfway point of the climb.

Holy Week, the Free Day on 18 April and the Start of Summer

Orthodox Easter falls on 2 May in 2027, so Holy Week, the most important week in the Greek calendar, runs from Palm Sunday on 25 April to Holy Saturday on 1 May. These dates follow from the Easter date; confirm church and municipal programmes nearer the time.

Good Friday and the Easter midnight service

On Good Friday evening each parish carries its flower-covered Epitaphios through the streets, and on Holy Saturday Athenians gather outside churches before midnight to light candles from the Holy Light at the Resurrection. The service on Lycabettus, at the chapel of Agios Georgios, is the best-known in the city, and the night ends with fireworks and red eggs. Both are free to watch; expect crowds and early closures that day.

Check opening hours across the long weekend. The Acropolis closes on 1 May and on Easter Sunday, the Temple of Poseidon's site closes from Good Friday through Easter Sunday, and our featured Corinth tour does not run on Good Friday.

The start of the boat season

The Riviera catamarans from Alimos start sailing in late April. The sea is still around 16°C, so treat April boat days as a sunbathing and island trip rather than a swim. Our Athens catamaran charter guide and Athens day cruise guide cover what runs. Our guide to the best things to do in Athens covers the rest of the city, from the free hills to the ticketed sites.

What we would actually book

April is the month to see everything. We'd book the Acropolis at 08:00 or after 17:00, a food walk, and two days out: Delphi and Sounion at sunset, both of which have their best light of the spring. If your dates include Holy Week, we'd keep Good Friday and Holy Saturday evening free for the processions and the midnight service; they are worth more than any tour that night.

What Not to Do in Athens in April

  • Plan the sites for 1 May or Easter Sunday. The Acropolis closes on both, and the Temple of Poseidon from Good Friday to Easter Sunday.
  • Expect warm sea swimming. The sea is around 16°C. Lake Vouliagmeni is the warmer option; our Lake Vouliagmeni tour guide covers it.
  • Book an early-April catamaran. The season starts in late April.
  • Leave Holy Week bookings late. Hotels reach €148 by Good Friday and €186 on 1 May.

More April-Friendly Activities

  • A private day by car. Our Athens private tour guide compares the drivers who cover the sites and the Riviera in a day.
  • A wine tasting. Our Athens wine tasting guide compares the tastings in central Athens.
  • The Holy Saturday service on Lycabettus. Free, crowded and the most memorable night of the Greek year.
  • Ancient Corinth. Our Ancient Corinth tour guide compares the half days that suit spring.

What to Pack for Athens in April

Spring clothes for 21°C days and 12°C evenings, with rain on about 9 days.

  • Light layers and a jacket for the evening. Holy Week services run late outdoors.
  • Sun protection. Nearly eight hours of sun a day, and the Acropolis has no shade.
  • Comfortable shoes with grip. Polished marble paths and uneven ancient paving.
  • Modest clothes for churches. Covered shoulders for Holy Week services and monastery visits at Meteora.

Our Take

April is the month we'd steer most first-timers toward if May feels too expensive: the Acropolis keeps summer hours in spring temperatures, every day trip has the light it needs, and the first three weeks price about a fifth below May.

Tips for Athens in April

  • Book before Holy Week. Midweek hotels ran €139 to €140 to 24 April and €148 by Good Friday.
  • Use the summer hours. From 1 April the Acropolis stays open until 20:00; a slot after 17:00 misses the midday groups.
  • Take the free day on 18 April to the other sites. The Agora and Kerameikos make the most of free entry, while the Acropolis is busiest.
  • Budget for the €10 climate fee. It applies per room per night at four-star hotels from 1 April.
  • Book Delphi in April for the lower ticket fare. Our featured tour's ticket option drops to €92 from €105.
  • Visiting at a different time of year? Our Athens in March guide covers the month before, with Carnival and Clean Monday, and our Athens in May guide the month after, with Easter Sunday and the year's best weather at its highest prices.

How We Put This Guide Together

Weather figures are the National Observatory of Athens' 1991 to 2020 downtown normals (21.1°C high, 12.3°C low, 27.6 mm, 60% humidity in April), with rain days (9.3) and sunshine (231 hours) from the Hellenic National Meteorological Service's Elliniko normals for 1955 to 2010. Sea temperature is the April average from seatemperature.org; sunrise and sunset are calculated for central Athens in summer time. Hotel prices are live medians, not estimates: the 80 most-reviewed four-star hotels within 2 km of Syntagma, two adults, one night, queried on 19 October 2026, room only. Our January, March and May comparisons use only the 65 hotels that returned a rate on every date. Holy Week dates follow from Orthodox Easter on 2 May 2027. Site closures and the 18 April free day come from the site and ticket details gathered for our individual guides; Acropolis summer hours (08:00 to 20:00) come from current visitor guides, which differ slightly on last entry. Every tour named here was checked against the booking platform's partner API on 19 October 2026: all eight are active with April 2027 departures, and the Holy Week gaps are taken from their published schedules. Activity ratings are editorial judgement; we have not visited Athens in April as a team.
