May has Athens' best weather of the year and its highest prices: 26°C days, almost no rain and central hotels at the year's top rate. It opens with Greek Easter, and the boats are running.

What You Should Know

  • May is Athens at its best weather and highest price. Days average 26°C with over nine hours of sun, and central four-star hotels ran a flat €175 to €187 a night in our live sample, level with September.
  • Greek Easter falls on 2 May 2027. The Acropolis closes on 1 May and Easter Sunday, Easter Monday (3 May) is a public holiday, and several tours pause on the Easter weekend.
  • Prices do not dip anywhere in May: Wednesdays ran €175 to €181 and Saturdays €181 to €187. July, at €155 for the same hotels, is cheaper than May despite being high summer.
  • Most people don't realize the sea is still only about 18.5°C in May, so the boats run and the beaches open, but most visitors wait until June to swim comfortably.

Athens in May: Is It Worth It?

⭐ Best-value May window, based on our hotel sample: midweek, especially Wednesday 5 or 26 May. Those two Wednesdays priced lowest at €175 to €176, against €181 to €187 on Saturdays. The spread is small: May is one price season, not a month with a cheap week. This is a price finding, not a weather claim.

💰 Average May hotel prices (central Athens, 4-star, room only):
Easter weekend (1 to 3 May): ~€179 to €183/night · Midweek: ~€175 to €181/night · Saturdays: ~€181 to €187/night
Live median rates for the 80 most-reviewed four-star hotels within 2 km of Syntagma, two adults, one night, pulled 19 October 2026 for 2027 dates. Room only: the €10 per room per night summer climate resilience fee is extra.

Planning Athens for May 2027? The weather figures here are long-term normals; the hotel rates, tour schedules, Easter dates and free day are for May 2027. May is the month the climate is closest to perfect: warm enough for evenings outside, not yet hot enough to make the Acropolis a chore, and almost dry. We'd book it without hesitation if the budget allows, and if it does not, we'd take April, about a fifth cheaper, or July, which costs less despite the heat.

The month opens with Greek Easter. Easter Sunday is a family day across Athens, with lamb on the spit, and the sites and several tours close for it, so plan the first weekend around the celebrations rather than the ruins.

Temperatures, rainfall and humidity are the National Observatory of Athens' 1991 to 2020 downtown normals; rain days and sunshine are the Hellenic National Meteorological Service's Elliniko normals (1955 to 2010); sea temperature is the May average from seatemperature.org.

Temperature and Humidity

Days average 26.5°C, five degrees up on April, and nights 17°C, warm enough to eat outside. Humidity is low at around 56%, so the heat is dry. The record May high downtown is 37.6°C: a hot spell late in the month is possible, and the Acropolis has no shade, so the early slot starts to matter.

Rain Pattern

Rain falls on about 6 days, around 21 mm in total, usually as a brief shower or a thunderstorm. Sunshine passes nine hours a day.

Daylight and Sea

Sunrise moves from 06:30 to 06:05 and sunset from 20:14 to 20:40, so May has more than fourteen hours of light by the end. The sea warms to about 18.5°C, which is the main thing May has not caught up on: the boats sail, but most visitors find the water bracing until June.

Athens in May: Prices and Crowds Week by Week

1 to 3 May: Easter weekend

Holy Saturday and Labour Day fall together on 1 May (€183 in our sample), Easter Sunday on the 2nd (€179) and Easter Monday on the 3rd (€180). The Acropolis closes on 1 May and Easter Sunday, and several tours in our set have no departures on 1 or 2 May.

4 to 17 May: spring at the top price

Wednesday 5 May was the cheapest night we found at €175; Saturday 8 and 15 May ran €181 to €182 and Wednesday 12 May €180.

18 May: a free day

Tuesday 18 May, International Museums Day, is a free day at state sites, so the Acropolis is busier than usual. Hotels priced at €181.

19 to 31 May: the run into summer

Saturdays reach the month's high at €186 to €187 on 22 and 29 May; Wednesday 26 May dips to €176.

Against the rest of the year: the same 63 hotels priced at €180 in mid-May, against €91 in January, €140 in April, €155 in mid-July and €180 in mid-September. May and September are the year's top price plateau; we'd treat them as level rather than rank them.

Greek Easter, the Free Day on 18 May and the Start of Beach Season

Greek Easter weekend

Orthodox Easter Sunday falls on 2 May 2027. The weekend starts with the midnight Resurrection service on Holy Saturday, 1 May, when Athenians gather outside churches with candles and the night ends with fireworks; the service at Agios Georgios on Lycabettus is the best known. Easter Sunday is the family feast, with lamb roasted on spits and red eggs, and Easter Monday is a public holiday.

What closes: the Acropolis on 1 May and Easter Sunday, the Temple of Poseidon's site from Good Friday to Easter Sunday, and, in our tour set, the Delphi trip and the Corinth tour on 1 and 2 May and the food walk and private car tour on 1 May. The Sounion tour does not run on Easter Sunday.

Free entry on 18 May

International Museums Day is one of the fixed free days at state sites. In 2027 it falls on a Tuesday. As on every free day, timed entry still applies and the Acropolis Museum sets its own rules.

Boats, beaches and a cool sea

By May the Riviera catamarans are sailing. The sea, at about 18.5°C, is the one thing still behind: we'd book a boat day for the islands and the sun rather than the swimming. Our Athens catamaran charter guide and Athens day cruise guide compare them. For the city as a whole, see our guide to the best things to do in Athens.

What we would actually book

May is the month for the long day trips. We'd book Meteora: the summer monastery calendar, all six open at weekends, and long light make it the best month of the spring for the fourteen-hour trip. Add the Acropolis at opening, a sunset at Sounion and a boat day, and keep the Easter weekend for the celebrations if your dates include it.

What Not to Do in Athens in May

  • Plan the sites for 1 or 2 May. The Acropolis is closed on Labour Day and Easter Sunday, and several tours pause.
  • Climb the Acropolis at midday. There is no shade, and late May can pass 30°C. Go at 08:00 or after 17:00.
  • Expect a warm sea. At about 18.5°C, most visitors find it bracing until June.
  • Wait for a cheap week. May prices are flat at €175 to €187; there is no dip to hold out for.

More May-Friendly Activities

What to Pack for Athens in May

Summer clothes for 26°C days, with a light layer for 17°C evenings.

  • A hat and sunscreen. Over nine hours of sun, and no shade on the Acropolis.
  • Comfortable shoes with grip. Polished marble and uneven paving.
  • A light layer. Evenings and boat days are cooler than the afternoon.
  • Swimwear. For a boat day or Lake Vouliagmeni, even if the sea is cool.
  • Covered shoulders for churches and monasteries. Needed at Meteora and for Easter services.

Our Take

The finding we'd plan around is that May costs the same as September and more than July: if you want warm, long days without May's price, late April costs about a fifth less and July less again, though July brings the heat.

Tips for Athens in May

  • Book Acropolis slots ahead. May is busy, and timed entry means popular morning slots go early.
  • Stay midweek. Wednesdays ran €175 to €181 against €181 to €187 on Saturdays.
  • Plan around Easter weekend. 1 and 2 May close the Acropolis and pause several tours; 3 May is a public holiday.
  • Price Sounion from May. Our featured tour rises to €66 from €56 in April.
  • Take the 18 May free day to the lesser sites. The Agora and Kerameikos make the most of it while the Acropolis is busy.
  • Visiting at a different time of year? Our Athens in April guide covers the month before, with Holy Week and prices a fifth lower, and our Athens in June guide the month after, when the sea warms up and the festival season begins.

How We Put This Guide Together

Weather figures are the National Observatory of Athens' 1991 to 2020 downtown normals (26.5°C high, 17.0°C low, 20.7 mm, 56% humidity in May), with rain days (6.4) and sunshine (291 hours) from the Hellenic National Meteorological Service's Elliniko normals for 1955 to 2010. Sea temperature is the May average from seatemperature.org; sunrise and sunset are calculated for central Athens in summer time. Hotel prices are live medians, not estimates: the 80 most-reviewed four-star hotels within 2 km of Syntagma, two adults, one night, queried on 19 October 2026, room only. Our January, April, July and September comparisons use only the 63 hotels that returned a rate on every date. Easter dates follow from Orthodox Easter on 2 May 2027. Site closures and the 18 May free day come from the site and ticket details gathered for our individual guides. Every tour named here was checked against the booking platform's partner API on 19 October 2026: all eight are active with May 2027 departures, and the Easter gaps are taken from their published schedules. Activity ratings are editorial judgement; we have not visited Athens in May as a team.
