Eight Cape Sounion sunset tours compared on price, group size and whether anyone actually guides you around the temple, plus why only one of them includes the €20 ticket.

What You Should Know

  • The Sounion ticket is €20 and only one of the eight tours here includes it, so most listed prices are really that price plus €20. That moves the true floor for a guided trip from €28 to €48.
  • The €20 is optional, and almost nobody tells you that. It buys entry to the fenced ruins, not the sunset. Guests regularly skip it and watch from the free hills just outside, which are an easy walk up and give you the temple in silhouette against the sea.
  • The cheapest tour on this page gives you the most time at Sounion, roughly two hours against the single hour the mid-priced coaches allow. That inverts the order you would expect, and time on the headland is the thing that actually separates these tours.
  • Four of the eight give you no guide inside the archaeological site. On both €28 coach trips and both Key Tours departures the guide talks during the drive, then waits while you walk the site alone with an audio app.
  • There is no toilet on the coaches, on a drive of up to 1 hour 40 each way. It is the most common complaint from guests who otherwise rate these tours five stars, and no listing mentions it.
  • Departure time is set by the sunset, not the clock. The site closes when the sun goes down and last entry is 20 minutes before, so the same tour leaves Athens at 14:30 in December and 18:00 in June.

Temple of Poseidon Tours: What You Are Actually Booking

A Temple of Poseidon tour starts at €28 and runs 4 to 6 hours, of which roughly 3 are on the road. Cape Sounion sits about 70 km southeast of Athens at the tip of the Attic peninsula, an hour to ninety minutes each way depending on whether your driver takes the coastal road or the inland motorway. That makes it the least demanding of the big Athens day trips: compare it with a Delphi tour from Athens at 9 to 10 hours, a Mycenae day tour, or a Meteora day tour at closer to 14. If you would rather reach the coast by sea, an Athens catamaran cruise sails the same Riviera, and an Athens day cruise carries on to the Saronic islands.

What you are going to see is a 5th-century BC Doric temple on a cliff about 60 metres above the Aegean, with 15 of its original 34 columns still standing. It was built around 440 BC on the site of an earlier temple the Persians destroyed, and it marked the point where Athenian sailors got their first and last sight of home. On a clear evening you can see Kea, Kythnos and the hills of the Peloponnese from the headland.

Amazing view of ancient Greek temple the Temple of Poseidon at sunset.

The reason almost every tour here is a sunset tour is simple: the site closes at sunset, and the last hour of light on an exposed marble headland over open sea is the whole point. Below we compare eight of them: four coach trips, two small-group tours and two private options. This is where these tours diverge, and it is not on price: what separates them is how much of the golden hour you actually get on the headland, and whether anyone guides you once you are through the gate. Most people don't realize the cheapest tour here gives you the most time at Sounion, roughly double what the mid-priced coaches allow, which inverts the order you would expect.

Our Top Pick

Athens: Cape Sounion & Poseidon Temple Sunset Half-Day Trip

€28 · 4.7 (9,932 reviews)

The joint-cheapest of the eight and by a wide margin the most reviewed Sounion tour on the market, with a review base four times the size of anything else here and a 4.7 holding steady across it. That combination of lowest price and largest evidence base is what earns it the pick. You get 5.5 hours, an air-conditioned coach with Wi-Fi, an English-speaking archaeologist travelling with the group, and around 2 hours on the headland itself, which is far more time at the temple than the Key Tours departures give you. Two things to be clear about before booking. The €20 ticket is not included, so budget €48 rather than €28. And the archaeologist briefs you on the coach rather than walking the site with you: inside the archaeological site you explore alone with the audio guide app. If you want someone explaining the temple in front of it, book the small-group tour or a private option instead.

"Real cost" adds that €20 to every tour that does not include it, so the eight compare like with like. The Lake Vouliagmeni tour includes the separate lake entry (€16 weekdays, €19 weekends) but not the temple ticket.

The timing to the sunset is ideal, and entry is optional

The guide Anna and driver Panos were really good, they provided everything we needed. In terms of logistics, everything worked perfectly, the timing from the afternoon to the sunset is ideal to experience the sunset at Sounion. Entrance fee (as mentioned) is not included, ca. 20€ for adults, however it's not compulsory to enter in the temple site, there are view points also outside. There is also a beach 5-10 minutes walking from the site.

Snack bar outside, no services once you are inside

My family was very happy with this well organized tour. Our guide Anna was friendly, knowledgeable, and engaging. This was a sunset tour, and we reached our destination with enough time to hike around a bit and enjoy some gelato before heading into the temple site. Traveler tips: There is a snack bar that sells drinks and a nice selection of packaged snacks (several healthy choices) as an alternative to sitting down in the cafe. Once you're in the temple site, there are no services.

Other coaches arrived just before sunset, we had time

This tour exceeded my expectations. After a very cloudy day in Athens, it cleared up for sunset and the temperature was perfect. Alex gave us a great overview of history. The drive is long after an overnight of travel, but the driver was impressive in handling the coastline curves. We were really glad we had some extra time at Sounion. Some tours were arriving just before sunset, but we had enough time to climb around on the hills, taking in the view, getting some ice cream and even finding a way down to the water to get my feet wet!

What to Expect on a Cape Sounion Sunset Tour

Most sunset tours follow the same shape. The times below are for a late September departure, when Athens sunset falls around 19:20. Shift everything earlier in winter and later in midsummer.

  1. 014:00 PM

    Meet in central Athens

Coach tours use fixed points: Karaiskaki Square, the Key Tours office, or Omonoia and Plaka. Small-group and private options collect you from your hotel.

  2. 024:30 PM

    Down the Athenian Riviera

South through Glyfada, Vouliagmeni and Varkiza with the Saronic Gulf on your right the whole way, so sit on the right going out. Some tours add Vouliagmeni Lake or a swim between May and October, and most pull in at a lookout short of the cape for the classic distant shot.

  3. 035:45 PM

Arrive, and decide about the ticket

You pay the €20 yourself on seven of the eight, and it is optional: plenty of guests watch from the free hills outside instead. The café, snack bar, toilets and shop are all out here. There is nothing inside the site, so use them before you walk up.

  4. 046:15 PM

    The temple and the headland

Between 1 and 2 hours depending on the operator, and the figure worth checking before you book. Fifteen of the original 34 Doric columns still stand, with Byron's 1810 signature on the northernmost one of the entrance portico.

  5. 057:20 PM

    Sunset over the Aegean

The reason everyone is here, on a cliff 60 metres above open sea with Kea and Kythnos visible on a clear evening. Stay through the blue hour if your tour allows: the crowd thins and the marble holds its colour after the sun has gone.

  6. 069:00 PM

    Back in Athens

One to 1.5 hours back by the same coastal road. Half-day tours run 4 to 6 hours door to door, which still leaves a late dinner in Athens outside midsummer.

Bring more sun protection than the hour suggests. The headland is exposed on three sides with essentially no shade, and even a 6pm arrival in July is still fierce. Wear shoes with some grip: the walk from the car park up to the temple is short and not steep, nothing like the Acropolis, but the rock underfoot is polished smooth in places.

Expect company. Sunset is the busiest hour of the day at Sounion by a wide margin, and summer weekends are the peak of it. Weekday visits are noticeably quieter, and most guests find that walking a little way around the headland is enough to leave the crowd behind entirely, with several describing having the far side effectively to themselves.

We wouldn't choose a coach tour for everyone, though. The coaches have no toilet on a run of up to 1 hour 40 each way, the seats are narrow, and the live commentary is English-only, which guests with limited English say they struggled to follow. If any of those is a problem, the multilingual audio-guide trip or a private vehicle solves it for the price difference.

Our Take

Read every price on this page as a starting figure. Seven of these eight tours leave the €20 ticket to you, so the honest floor for a guided Temple of Poseidon tour is €48, not €28. Adding it back is the only way to compare the eight fairly, and doing so reorders the table: the private tour stops looking like a luxury and starts looking like the best-value guided option here. The wrinkle is that the €20 is optional in a way no listing admits, and a meaningful number of guests skip it and watch the sunset from outside the fence perfectly happily. If that is you, the €28 coach tour really is €28.

The €20 Ticket: Only One Tour Includes It

Sounion charges €20 for full admission to the archaeological site, with a €10 reduced rate. That is the government-set price and it is the same whether you buy it at the gate or an operator buys it for you.

Of the eight tours compared here, exactly one includes it: the €90 private tour from Mykonos Transfer Co. Everything else is priced without it, which is why the table above carries a Real Cost column. The €28 coach trips are really €48, a 71% jump on the headline number, and the €110 Lake Vouliagmeni tour is the odd one out: it covers the lake entry (€16 weekdays, €19 weekends) but still leaves the temple ticket to you.

The consequence worth noticing is what happens at the top of the table. Once the ticket is counted, the €90 private tour lands below the €78 small-group Riviera trip, at €90 against €98, while giving you your own vehicle, hotel pickup and a licensed guide inside the site. On raw listed price the private tour looks like a €12 premium. On real cost it is €8 cheaper.

Two caveats. First, if anyone in your party qualifies for the €10 reduced rate (EU students and various concessions, with ID), that discount disappears inside a bundled fare, so buying your own is better again. Second, the €90 private listing describes its included ticket using an outdated €5 figure, which was the old off-season reduced rate rather than today's price. The inclusion itself is stated clearly; the number beside it is stale, so confirm it at booking. A small number of guests also report booking a fare that did include admission, so ticket-inclusive variants may exist on some listings: check what you are actually selecting at checkout.

You do not actually have to pay it

Here is the part the listings leave out. The €20 buys you entry to the fenced archaeological site, not the sunset. The headland around the enclosure is open, free, and gives you the temple in silhouette against the Aegean, which for most people is the photograph they came for.

This is not a theory. Guests on these tours describe it independently and consistently: that entering the site is not compulsory because there are viewpoints outside it, that they declined to pay and found the views from the nearby hills excellent and the walk up easy, and that the sunset can be admired perfectly well from the rock. Several who did pay came away thinking the enclosure held less than they expected for the money, while still rating the sunset itself as the highlight of their time in Athens.

So the decision is genuinely yours, and it changes the maths on this page. Pay the €20 if you want to walk among the columns, read Byron's signature up close and see the temple platform from inside. Skip it if you came for the view and the light, and put the €20 towards dinner instead. On a €28 coach tour that is the difference between a €48 evening and a €28 one.

The 8 Best Temple of Poseidon Tours

Ranked by how confidently we would recommend each one, weighing rating, review depth, group size, whether you get a guide at the site, and the true cost once the €20 ticket is counted. We'd give the edge to time on the headland over almost everything else here: an hour is enough to walk the temple or watch the sun go down, but not to do both without hurrying.

1
Best overall

Cape Sounion & Poseidon Temple Sunset Half-Day Trip

€28 plus €20 entry, 5.5 hours, 4.7 from 9,932 reviews. The most-reviewed Sounion tour by a distance, on a base four times larger than anything else here, and joint-cheapest at €48 all in. It is also the longest coach trip, and that time goes where it should: guests describe roughly 2 hours on the headland against the single hour Key Tours allows, with one noting rival coaches pulling in just before sunset while theirs had time to climb the hills and reach the water. Air-conditioned coach with Wi-Fi and an English-speaking archaeologist who covers the mythology on the drive down. The trade-off: the archaeologist stays outside the gate, so you walk the site with the audio app. Meets at Karaiskaki Square, not your hotel.

2
Best guided tour

Cape Sounion & Temple of Poseidon: Small Group Tour

€66 plus €20 entry, 5 hours, 4.7 from 2,184 reviews. The cheapest way to have a real guide with you at the temple rather than a voice in an app, on the same 4.7 as our top pick. Maximum 19 in an air-conditioned minivan, hotel pickup from central Athens, a photo stop at Vouliagmeni Lake, and a beach swim from May to October. The €38 premium over the coaches buys the guide and a vehicle a third of the size. Morning and sunset departures both run.

3
Best value private

Private Tour to Cape Sounion, Day Swim or Sunset

€90 including entry, 5 hours, 5.0 from 24 reviews. The only tour here that includes the ticket, which is what makes it interesting: at €90 all in it undercuts the €78 Riviera trip's real cost of €98, while adding a private vehicle, a licensed guide inside the temple, and pickup from a hotel, Airbnb or the cruise port. Pick a day departure with a swim or an afternoon one timed for sunset. The 5.0 rests on just 24 reviews, a far thinner base than the coaches, so weigh it accordingly.

Check availability
4
Best for swimming & the Riviera

Sounio, Poseidon Temple & Athens Riviera, Swimming

€78 plus €20 entry, 6 hours, 5.0 from 542 reviews. A perfect 5.0 on a substantial base, and the smallest group here at a maximum of 6. It is also the fullest day: hotel pickup, Vouliagmeni Lake, Greek coffee and a bougatsa at a Varkiza bakery (included), about an hour at the temple, a swim at a secluded beach and a taverna stop before the drive back. Lunch is on you. At €98 all in you are paying for the small vehicle and the extras, not for more time at Sounion.

Check availability
5
Best budget alternative

Cape Sounio & Poseidon Temple Trip with Audio Guide

€28 plus €20 entry, 5 hours, 4.3 from 5,389 reviews. The other €28 option, and the one to take if you do not speak English: the audio guide covers six languages where most rivals are English-only. Three central departure points (Omonoia, the Old Parliament, Plaka), hotel pickup on request. The 4.3 is the lowest rating here and the listing is explicit that there is no guide at the monument, so treat it as the multilingual budget pick.

Check availability
6
Best for a spa day

Lake Vouliagmeni Spa & Temple of Poseidon Tour

€110 plus €20 entry, 6 hours, 4.5 from 272 reviews. Private, with pickup from a hotel, the airport or an Airbnb, splitting the day between two hours in the mineral lake at Vouliagmeni and an hour at the temple. The lake entry is included, which is unusual. Two catches: you get an English-speaking driver rather than a guide (a licensed guide is available on request at extra cost), and the temple ticket is still not included. The most expensive option here, and it earns that only if the thermal lake genuinely appeals. The vehicle is wheelchair accessible; the archaeological site itself is not.

7
Most established coach tour

Cape Sounion & Temple of Poseidon Sunset Experience

€35 plus €20 entry, 4 to 5 hours, 4.4 from 1,766 reviews. A long-running operation: luxury air-conditioned coach, an escort with headsets, an app audio guide, departing from the Key Tours office on Athanasiou Diakou. It is the shortest tour here and gives one hour inside the site, half what our top pick allows, for €7 more on the base fare. Book it for the polished operation and the central meeting point, not for time at the temple.

Check availability
8
Most flexible timing

Temple of Poseidon & Cape Sounion Half-Day Tour

€35 plus €20 entry, 4 to 5 hours, 4.4 from 1,226 reviews. Same operation, coach and meeting point as the Sunset Experience at the same price and rating, but this listing sells both an afternoon and a sunset departure, so it is the one to book if you would rather see the temple in daylight or cannot make the sunset slot. Archaeologist escort with headsets, maximum 49. Little else separates the two.

Check availability

Quick rule: book the €28 Ammon Express trip if you are happy exploring with an audio app, the €66 small-group tour if you want a guide beside you at the temple, and the €90 private tour if there are two or more of you, because once the ticket is counted it costs less than the small-group Riviera trip.

Sunset Timing: Why There Is No Fixed Departure Time

Sounion is the rare site whose closing time is not a time at all. It opens at 09:30 and closes at sunset, with last entry 20 minutes before. Every sunset tour on this page is therefore built around a moving target, and departures shift through the year rather than running to a fixed clock.

Key Tours publishes its schedule, which shows how far it moves: 14:30 from November to mid-January, 15:00 in January and February, 16:00 in early spring and autumn, 17:00 across March to May and July to September, and 18:00 in June and July.

Athens sunset runs from 17:06 at its earliest, on 6 December, to 20:53 at its latest, on 28 June. Nearly four hours of swing, and it changes your evening completely: a June tour leaving at 18:00 will not have you back in central Athens much before 23:00, while a December one returns you by about 19:30.

Two practical consequences. First, always check the departure time on your specific date rather than assuming, because the same listing runs four hours apart depending on the month. Second, the site closes on 1 January, 25 March, Good Friday through Easter Sunday, 1 May and 25 to 26 December, so a tour on those dates cannot deliver what it advertises.

If you would rather not pay at all, admission is free on 6 March, 18 April, 18 May, 28 October, the last weekend of September, and the first Sunday of each month from November to March. Those are also, predictably, the busiest days on the headland. One guest in our review sample happened to visit on 18 May and confirmed admission was free that day.

Opening hours, closure dates and ticket prices at Greek state sites are set by the Ministry of Culture and do change. We have given the figures current at the time of writing and cross-checked the €20 against operators selling it as a paid add-on and against guests who paid it in mid-2026, but before you travel confirm your date against the ministry's own listing at odysseus.culture.gr and the official ticketing portal at hhticket.gr, which is the only official channel for state site tickets.

How Much Does a Temple of Poseidon Tour Cost?

Listed prices run €28 to €110 per person, but seven of the eight exclude the €20 ticket. The bands below are real costs with admission counted, so they compare like with like.

Coach€48–55

Fixed meeting points, audio guides

The two €28 trips at €48 and both Key Tours departures at €55. This band covers every large-coach option, and none of them puts a guide beside you inside the site. What separates them is time on the headland: 1.5 hours on the €28 Ammon trip against 1 hour on the €35 Key Tours ones, which makes the cheaper tour the better one.

Small group€86–98

Hotel pickup and a live guide

The €66 Getaways Greece tour at €86 and the €78 Onedaylocal Riviera trip at €98. You are paying for a minivan rather than a coach, collection from your hotel, and a guide who actually walks the site with you. The €98 option adds a swim stop, a bakery stop and the smallest group here at 6.

Private€90–130

Your own vehicle and schedule

The €90 Mykonos Transfer tour, which is the only ticket-inclusive option and therefore €90 all in, and the €110 Lake Vouliagmeni spa trip at €130. Note that the cheaper private tour undercuts the small-group band entirely once the ticket is counted, which makes it the value anomaly on this page.

The honest read: €48 is the real floor, and €90 buys a private vehicle with a licensed guide and the ticket included. What matters more than price here is that spending more does not buy you more time at the temple: every tier lands within an hour of the others on the headland, so the extra money goes on group size, pickup and who is talking to you, not on the sunset itself.

Private or Group: Which Sounion Tour to Choose

Sounion is a better candidate for a Temple of Poseidon private tour than most Athens day trips, and the reason is the arithmetic rather than the luxury. We'd book this if there are two or more of you and the coach logistics put you off: no fixed meeting point across the city, no 22:15 return to a metro station that may have stopped running, and a vehicle with a toilet stop whenever you want one.

Because the drive is short, a private Sounion tour does not carry the premium a private Delphi or Meteora day does, and as the ticket section sets out, the €90 option ends up below the priciest small-group trip once admission is counted.

Group tours still make sense in two cases. Travelling solo, per-head economics favour the coach, and €48 for 5.5 hours with an archaeologist on board is hard to argue with. And if you want a swim, a lake stop or a taverna lunch in the day, the small-group Riviera trips are built around exactly that, where the private options treat them as add-ons.

One thing private does not buy you is more time at the temple. The private tours run 5 to 6 hours, the same as the coaches, and allocate about an hour on the headland. What changes is the drive, the pickup and who is standing beside you at the columns.

Our Take

Time on the headland decides this trip, not the headline price. An hour is enough to walk the temple or watch the sun go down, not both without hurrying. What we consistently see in guest reports is that the tour giving you most of it is also the cheapest, with guests describing time to climb the hills and reach the water while rival coaches were pulling in with minutes to spare.

Tips for Booking a Temple of Poseidon Tour

  • Buy your ticket online and go up about an hour before sunset. The advice comes from guests who did exactly that. It clears the gate queue and leaves you time to find a spot before the crowd builds.
  • Bring a jacket even in August. The wind on the headland is relentless and comes from every direction, and there is no shade either. It is the most common piece of hindsight advice from summer visitors.
  • Coach tours will not collect you from your hotel. Ammon Express uses Karaiskaki Square, Key Tours its own office on Athanasiou Diakou, Gray Line three central points. Factor the journey to the meeting point into your afternoon.
  • Sit on the right-hand side of the coach going out. The Saronic Gulf is on that side the whole way down, and it is the better half of the drive.
  • Do not book dinner for that evening in summer. Returns land around 22:00 to 22:15 in June and July, and Athens metro works have repeatedly meant a line stops running before the coach gets back.
  • Prefer the snack bar to the sit-down restaurant. Opinion on the restaurant splits sharply and the complaints cluster in the hour before sunset when it is overwhelmed: 30 minute waits, dishes arriving separately. The snack bar next to it draws no such complaints.
  • Book late, once you can see the forecast. The whole trip turns on clear skies and these tours rarely sell out at short notice, so waiting for a settled evening costs you nothing.
  • Walk round the far side for the photographs. Sunset is the busiest hour at Sounion, but guests consistently report that a short walk around the headland leaves the crowd behind almost entirely. Weekdays are quieter again.
  • There is a beach 5 to 10 minutes away if you want a swim first. The path down is rocky and runs through thorny scrub, so change before you go and leave good shoes on the coach.
  • For two or more travellers, price the private option properly. At €90 with the ticket included it costs less than the €78 small-group Riviera trip once that tour's €20 admission is added, and adds a private vehicle and a guide at the temple.
  • Ask about the reduced rate. Admission is €10 rather than €20 for various concessions with ID, and that saving disappears inside any bundled fare.
  • Check the closure dates before booking. The site shuts on 1 January, 25 March, Good Friday through Easter Sunday, 1 May, and 25 to 26 December.
  • Look for Byron's signature. Carved into the northernmost column of the entrance portico and dated 1810, it is easy to walk straight past if nobody points it out.

How We Selected These Tours

We compared the Cape Sounion tours departing Athens that carry a published rating and a meaningful review base, then kept eight covering genuinely different formats: four coach trips, two small-group tours and two private options. Prices, ratings, review counts and durations were verified in August 2026 against current listings.

We also read 147 verified guest reviews of the highest-volume tour on this page, covering May to August 2026, which is where the practical detail in the tips and the "what you should know" panel comes from. Where guests disagreed, as they do on the on-site restaurant, we have said so rather than picking a side. Inclusions were checked against each operator's own website wherever one exists, rather than against booking-platform summaries, because those disagreed on several tours. The €20 admission figure was cross-checked against multiple 2026 sources and against an operator selling the ticket as a paid add-on at that price; older guides still quoting €10 or a €10/€5 seasonal split predate the April 2025 restructuring of Greek site pricing. Where a listing does not publish a maximum group size, we have said so rather than repeating a figure from marketing copy. We have not taken these tours ourselves, so the judgements here come from comparing listings, operator documentation and published guest reviews.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is a Temple of Poseidon tour from Athens?+

From €28 per person for a half-day coach trip, rising to €110 for a private tour taking in the thermal lake at Vouliagmeni. Add €20 for the site ticket, which seven of the eight do not include: that puts a coach tour at €48 to €55 all in, and a small-group or private tour at €86 to €130.

Is the Temple of Poseidon entrance fee included in tours?+

Usually not. Only the €90 private tour includes it; even the €110 Lake Vouliagmeni trip covers the lake entry but leaves the temple ticket to you. Assume €20 per person on top unless the listing says otherwise. Worth knowing first: the €20 covers the fenced site, not the sunset, and many guests skip it and watch from the free hills just outside.

What time do Cape Sounion sunset tours leave Athens?+

It depends on the month, because the site closes at sunset and last entry is 20 minutes before. Key Tours, which publishes its schedule, runs from 14:30 in deep winter through to 18:00 in June and July. Athens sunset ranges from 17:06 on 6 December to 20:53 on 28 June, so always check your specific date.

How long do you need at the Temple of Poseidon?+

Around 1.5 to 2 hours is comfortable, and the tours here range from 1 hour to about 2. One hour is enough to walk the ruins or watch the sunset, but not to do both without hurrying, particularly once you have queued for a ticket. The two-hour stops leave time to climb the surrounding hills, eat something and still be in position well before the light goes. If time on site matters to you, check that figure before you check the price: it is the clearest difference between these tours and it does not track what they cost.

What is the best Temple of Poseidon sunset tour?+

For most travellers the €28 Cape Sounion and Poseidon Temple Sunset Half-Day Trip from Ammon Express is the strongest choice: it holds 4.7 from 9,932 reviews, by far the largest review base of any Sounion tour, and it gives around 2 hours on the headland, roughly double the pricier coach tours. If you want a guide walking the site with you rather than an audio app, the €66 small-group tour carries the same 4.7 rating.

Is a private Temple of Poseidon tour worth it?+

More than on most Athens day trips, because the short drive means private carries no large premium. The €90 option is the only one including the ticket, so at €90 all in it undercuts the €78 Riviera trip's €98 while adding your own vehicle, pickup from any address and a licensed guide inside the temple. For two or more travellers it is the value pick, not the luxury one.

Can you visit Cape Sounion without a tour?+

Yes, but not for sunset, which is the catch. KTEL buses run from central Athens for about €6.30 one way and take roughly two hours each way, and the last return departs before the sun goes down. An Athens local who compared the two before taking a tour with a visiting friend concluded the tour costs only marginally more than the public bus and is the only option that guarantees you are still there at sunset and still get home. Driving yourself solves it too. Otherwise the tour is buying you the return leg after dark.

Is the Temple of Poseidon worth visiting?+

Yes, particularly at sunset, which is what nearly every tour is built around. A Doric temple from around 440 BC on a cliff 60 metres above the Aegean, with 15 of its original 34 columns still upright and views to Kea and Kythnos on a clear evening. Lord Byron carved his name into a column in 1810 and it is still legible.
